I thought the title said 'last convincing action hero'... I quite like Statham films because they're old school action.

He's completely unconvincing as anything - other than a moron, Raising Arizona is perfect for him - so not surprising really.

Agree with the OP and despair at the upcoming Equaliser film where he is going to play him as OCD and fighting the Russians now they are baddies again.

+1 to Nic Cage, Liam Neeson and Tom Cruise.

I would add Clive Owen and in a lot of his films Colin Farrel.

Although Nic Cage has made some truly terrible films, he's made a lot that I really enjoy.  I think he has a goofy, likeable quality that not many leading actors possess.  I also think he made a pretty decent action hero in Con Air.

Liam Neeson's recent career as an action hero is a complete mystery.  The Taken movies are pathetic.

The thing about Nic Cage is he's a non-naturalistic actor. A lot of times he's not even trying for believablity.

As for Liam Neeson, I love his fight scenes in Taken (the rest of the film is a shit sack but that's the plot) - all knees and elbows and for a tall man in his 50s he is fricking fast - I'd say he's convincing.

Jason Statham doesn't do hero - he can't act like he gives a shit about anyone else... he just whispers in a different way when he talks to them.. slightly different.

Roger Moore seemed perfectly acceptable as Bond until Daniel Craig came along - so what does that say about Dalton and Brosnan? (Dalton was heading in the right direction IMO).

The problem with action heroes is it's an arms race - Weismuller and Crabtree, who I remember watching in Tarzan and Flash Gordon weren't buff... Caradine wasn't that great at martial arts... so they seem improbable these days because action heroes need to be cariacatures of strength, speed etc.

Roger Moore seems funny now - at the time he seemed the business.
