  • My she is cute. Alot of energy I bet. We could never have a collie, far to active.
Our little Cocker-Jack-Shit is enough for us.

Might seem like a downer - but having spent a week looking after someone's dog, I could suggest a short-cut for people wanting the dog-experience.

Break a lot of your stuff, cover other stuff in drool and give up at least an hour a day no matter the weather to walk through a park which is largely full of dog poo - oh, and occasionally pick up poo in a bag.

Turns out, that I'm less of a dog-person than I had at first thought.

She's Lovely, reminds me of picking up my labrador 3 and a half years ago. Wouldn't be without a dog now.

Coming from good old Ludlow farming stock I learned very early on the best way of training a puppy is put it with an well trained adult dog.

It is so easy if you do that. The pup just copies.

    @Gassage

She's actually doing surprisingly well - learning quickly and seems to have settled in really quickly.  She's got 2 older boys to keep an eye on her ... the 2 on the right in this pic ...

The old girl on the left is the one that we lost a few weeks back.  If new pup is half as intelligent as she was, we'll be most happy.

I am a huge believer in the more time you spend socialising with your dog, the better the dog becomes.

    SQUEEEEE!

I take back my previous negativity... she looks too cute to be grumpy about.

I've been looking after a naughty dog* so have been a bit anti-dog since.

*Of course she's naughty... owners are lazy and haven't even bought tennis balls to throw for the dog!

So, really, you've been looking after a dog for naughty owners.

    That works!

She's not two yet, so hardly fair to assume she'd be totally well trained, but she is quite bad at things like "sit" even when there are no distractions... so when there's a cat down the road, an Alsation can pull pretty damned hard. And just walking her is like being dragged down the road.

Puppies are quite cute. Yours looks sweet. We got our first one a month ago, she's already quadrupled in size and started doing push-ups.

As dog owners, we're in a pretty small minority in believing that the dog should be trained to behave in the way that we want it to, not allowed to do what it wants to do.

By 2 yo, the dog should be pretty much trained - at least in all the basic commands (recall, sit, down, etc) and behaviours (not pulling on a lead).  It only gets harder to train as the dog gets older because they then have to unlearn the behaviours that they've already learned are acceptable (like not sitting, or whatever).

Trying to train an untrained 2yo Alsatian (an intelligent and strong breed) is likely to need a lot of effort and probably some professional help.  But that depends on whether the owners are happy with the dog as it is - as I said, we're probably in the minority in having dogs that are (very) well trained.
