What is a "British" guitar? (upcoming NGD)

I was in the Ashmolean museum recently and there are some "English Guitars" there - as in distinct from (and pre-dating in this country) Spanish guitars. They were more cittern-like. 

Can't find them on the Ashmolean site but like this:
