My first real memory of Springsteen is from The River.

I was a teenager working in the kitchen of the local MWay services, on night shift.  Had that (on cassette) playing over and over.

Backstreets. Not one of my favourites from this record but it's a bloody marvellous song by itself. It's incredible when you realise he managed to make a record where every single song was better than everything he'd written for the first two albums. Labels these days wouldn't give you the chance

It's worth watching the documentary to see just how much more was tried in the studio and left out of the mixes.

Wikipedia says that he was given an "enormous budget in a last-ditch effort at a commercially viable record". Like you say, can't see that happening now!

The intro to "Born to Run" isn't just trying to get the spirit of Spector's productions, it's an exact copy. An interesting choice possibly at the time? Since The Crystals weren't exactly serious rock.

In my view, as good as side 1 is, it is just a precursor to the astonishing brilliance on this 2nd side.
