I'm probably way off base here and I expect you know them already but 'Sleeptoken'?

I'd not heard them before. From a very quick listen I will certainly try some more. Ta!

    Notes! Thank you all.

Devin - when he's on form it's ace. That one was OK. Funeral was epic. Some of it is not as ace.
Agent Fresco - think I've heard them but will investigate further.
    Hawkwind - bit Cardiacs-lite.
Comrades - OK but I think I want vocals. Will bookmark a track for the future.
Keelhaul - less piratical than I'd expected. Liked it. To me more hardcore than metal maybe, but good.
Fall of Efrafa (I think) - promising, will have a proper listen
Amesoeurs - already like this bunch but a good reminder, ta.  I think that's Niege from Lantlos?
    Elder - yes, very much.
Confessor - see what you mean about the vocals, but there's certainly something there.
Disperse - like this one already.

I'll add two I forgot - MOL and the brilliant Conjourer/Pijn collaboration.

Im  massively digging sleep token right now. Took a while to get past the george ezra vocals but the newer stuff doesnt seem as bad for that...

Also how the fuck can the dude from lorna shore also be this good a singer?

We supported Pijn once and they got really pissed off because our drummer accidentally triggered all their visuals to kick off during our set. They were good though.

I was trying to place the vocals!

I'm not so sure on Sleeptoken. Some of it is good, even great, but then there are long stretches of teenager-baiting singing-about-feelings.

Yep and then there's the whole mask nonsense, I quite like them though.

Oooh. I stumbled onto Mountaineer. This is good stuff. Like the more contemplative bits of Mouth of the Architect somehow. Or earlier Oceansize before they just turned into weird tuneless rambling in alternating bars of 17/4 and 53/7.

Having just seen them, you could do worse than give Klone a listen.
And BTBAM - although they are mostly cookie monster vocals.
    And Haken

Members of Keelhaul have played in Integrity and RIngworm who are the pinnacle of early 90s metalcore (i.e. very metallic, very hardcore and nothing like what the term later came to mean). They are more like early Mastodon but a bit more spaced-out. They came out just before Mastodon i think.

Also, have you checked out Today Is The Day?

And yes, Neige was in Lantlos for a while.

Quite like Klone. In a similar vein to Karnivool maybe.

Just started some BTBAM, then Haken, the Today Is The Day.

if you like Mastodon then start with In The Eyes Of God.

Although Mastodon were a lot politer even at their heaviest.

    Ta!

I like some Mastodon. I'm probably more of an Intronaut chap though if that's any help.

I hate to break it to you, but an awful lot of music is about feelings.

You know, the inspiration, the writing, the production, the performing, the listening ...

My apologies that the phrase "teenager-baiting songs-about-feelings" wasn't even more obviously tongue-in-cheek.

Bookmarking this page for future reference.

@MagicPigDetective - Just listened to Elder - Innate Passage. Really enjoyed it - modern prog with vintage instruments (the keyboards / mellotrons are peak 1970s sounds). Thanks for the recommendation
