What do you see yourself as in the music/guitar world?

I'd say I'm a music fan who plays a bit of guitar and collects. I've played in a band but not a high level.

I'd be uncomfortable referring to myself as a musician and to some extent a guitarist!

I was thinking similar things myself of late.  You know, what is the point, after all, the 80's have been and gone and I'm not twenty anymore, who am I kidding. So I became a transvestite.

 

To me it seems a touch ridiculous to 'Collect' guitars of you can't play them, enjoy their tone and get inspired to come up with new stuff on them,. just by playing them and listening to their tone

I'm a player, a performer and a gear flipper. 

I'm not a collector, or a writer (to my annoyance).

In reality I say I'm a musician when asked. I make a living performing and teaching music, and occasionally session on guitar and bass. I don't say guitarist because I don't see myself as only that. Mainly because I can write, record, sing lead, play bass and guitar, and can program and know my way around a studio. 

Plus musician sounds more grandiose ;-)

Depends on who's asking, and why they're asking. @chillidoggy's response is very apposite.

My "safe" response is I'm a software engineer with an interest in music.

I often call myself a guitarist, but I can find my way around an electric bass and a keyboard; I write music (and songs sometimes); I've taught 1-1, classes, and devised teaching programmes which were well received on local radio. That might make me a musician.
