Let's make a Trainwreck amp cabinet in London Plane (not walnut as originally thought)

I have zero need for the volume levels that a Trainwreck requires to get the best out of though, but I'd love to find/build a super-low wattage version at ~2w for home use. I imagine that'd change things quite a bit though as I've read a lot about the interaction between pre- & power-amps on these.

Was at the workshop and spotted a nice neck size piece of plane    Cos sooner or later I will get back to my builds so grabbed it as we dont often get this thickness.

Couple of finish options on a offcut.  

Sanded London Plane


northern Guitars Merlot wood stain, 1 application. Bottom half sanded back after staining. 


Sanded London Plane and 2 appliations of Monty's Espresso Wax plus buffing. 


Merlot wood stain, 1 application. Bottom half sanded. Monty's Espresso Wax, 2 appliations. 


Conclusion is the Monty's Espresso wax darkens it as it says on the tin but makes it brown. I definitely prefer the merlot stain not sanded back under the Monty's Espresso wax. Now it's a case of getting the right amount of staining coats/ Monty's wax combination to taste. 

The wood join isn't very obvious either which is good.

Nice, I like the way it looks on the bottom picture.. You have some lacewood showing on the outside dont you?

If you have a piece of scrap, I would try it on a lacey area too.. Sorta like what happens when you stain and finish flamed maple. In the way the lighter areas take the stain differently. So does the lace. Worth a try anyway.

That combo of red stain and wax is bitchin.

Yes I believe I do have some lacewood so will give it a go with the staining.

Sanded through the grits 80, 120 and 240. Couple of bits to do by hand and then it's ready for staining.

I've recently finished a TW style amp using ECL82 (6BM8) valves from this design - https://chasingtone.com/odds-and-ends/the-gimlet/ - it comes out at about 8 watts but also has a post PI volume so can be used in the house. If you want a 1-2 watt version, Rob Robinette has some decent designs for small valve amps using either 12AU7 or EF80 output valves which I can highly recommend. His JCM800 (https://robrobinette.com/RR2104_Master_Volume_Micro.htm) is fantastic. You could easily use the preamp section of the TW and run it into a RR output for 1-2 watts.  Nick

And it's now Merlot! 

The merlot stain has raised the grain slightly so I will need to whizz over it with a light 240 grit and then I will probably stain it Merlot again before applying the Monty's Espresso wax.

Lightly sanded with 240 as the grain had raised after the first coat of Northern Guitars Merlot stain and a second coat of the stain applied. 

I'm having second thoughts about applying Monty's Espresso wax after the stain as I'm really liking the merlot colour. Let's see how it dries today.
