    Timmy (or Tim).
I like my OD with a pre amp pedal in front of it, so Nocturne Atomic Brain or Simble.  I also really liked the Tumnus set on low gain with some boost. Fabulous sounding thing.

I love how this thread resembles every other overdrive thread. 20 often conflicting recommendations hahaha

I use Klon derived pedals for this, set to give a little grit, but no real change in tone
Soul Food, Sweet Honey OD, Klone etc, set to low drive levels

My valve Dumble clone amps do the same

In both cases, many seem to set these amps and pedals to create a smooth OD sound, but that is not the only thing they can do to exceptional quality levels

I will join the chorus of recommendations for whichever one I use!

If you’re using a Fender amp, I’d recommend the Keeley Super Phat Mod, which is basically a boutique Blues Driver. I think there’s one in the classifieds right now.

Kicked my Timmy off the board, as it behaved much more like my Princeton’s natural drive - most notably in the way that at certain gains my Tele bridge pickup would drive it while the neck stayed clean, just like the amp. By comparison, the Timmy would go from doing nothing to dirtying up them both.

It’s also the most touch responsive OD that I’ve played - definitely satisfies your brief of responding to digging in a bit. Cleans up well on the volume knob too.

I used to use an EHX Soul Food for this sort of thing. I currently use a Caline Blue Sky for this exact reason.  Either way, you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune for what you have described.
Me too, both do the job very well and the Caline is cheap as chips.

I'd say either anything Marshall Bluesbreaker based or the actual BB, or a No-Balls ODR.

I love this place, we are a masterclass in not listening to the op. lol  For what it’s worth, I think theTimmy is a great choice, but this genuinely made me chuckle this morning (The quoting and editing function on apple products less so). ;)

I'm looking for a dynamic pedal to put in front of my clean amp so that when I strum softly, it's clean, and when I strum hard, it's slightly dirty.

…Not Timmy as I've had him before. Cheers!

    Here we go:
    Tc spark or timmy

The Caline Blue sky does exactly that for me, apparently a timmy type, but it really isnt.

Haha. Not to mention the BB and Klon-type pedals which have a mid bump, despite me wanting transparency. Thanks for the thoughts though, chaps. Keep them coming.

Based on the fact you said no mid bump, try a Skreddy Hybrid Fuzz Driver or Screwdriver. You can dial the fuzz out on them and they're really transparent but can push your signal a bit to do what you want. Some demos of that on Skreddys site.
