Same riff played on 5 different Marshalls. Some other stuff. No Pignose or Gorilla.

I like the JCM best in the mix, but liked the MOSFET the best in isolation.

  • Why TF do they sound so similar?
I wonder if they were re-amped from a DAW rather than in front from a loop pedal.

Having said that this kind of tone is easier to do on a SS amp than a Stonesy edge of breakup.

The valvestate was surprisingly decent. The two or three I played decades ago were awful.

I agree, it just sat better in the mix than all the rest.  It might not have been the one that I would have picked in isolation but it shows the importance of listening in context.

Which one? There were 2 JCM amps.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

The Mk1 Valvestates were excellent. So much better than the later versions.
I did loads of gigs with an 8080 combo and it was brilliant.

Probably cos it's same cab and mic for them all.
I've never had many real amps, but on Axe FX I've found that absolutely loads of the amps sound very similar until I change cabs.

Engl Screamer is the best sounding amp I've had, but it was very unreliable. If it wasn't the amp putting out no sound it was the massive separately sold footswitch not changing channels.

Why TF do they sound so similar?
Because they are. Most of the circuit ‘building block’ elements are the same in all of them, including the solid-state ones.

Differences between amps are much more noticeable to the player than the listener, and speakers (or load boxes/emulators) are almost as important as the amp.

I liked the second VS series too, although they were definitely voiced slightly more ‘modern’ (ie Mesa/Peavey) than classic Marshall. The AVTs were dreadful, but you can still get decent sounds out of them if you know how.

My favourite there, both solo’d and in the mix, is the 6100 - it just has *more* of something (mostly in the low-end I think), and is the most noticeably different from the other Marshalls. It’s a shame they have so many reliability issues.

It would be nice to have heard a JVM there too, I think they have that same ‘authority’.

TFFT,   totally agree and thought I was going to be labeled "typical grumpy bert comment"

tho here is one,   I didnt really like any of them.  no depth and very "scratchy" to my lugs, possibly too much gain for my tastes
just because you don't, doesn't mean you can't
just because you do, doesn't mean you should.

I'm not a high-gain player either, but I think it's often the case that what sounds good in a band mix doesn't tend to sound good on its own.  And the other way round - if you set up an amp to sound really nice at home it'll usually be pants with the band.

    With you on that.

It does reinforce the point that ICBM said that we buy gear for ourselves not the listner.

I doubt that there is a single person down the dog and duck on a friday night who could tell any difference in those at all.

The Marshalls sound utterly shite. And nothing like they do in real life.

    * apart from the TSL - because they are shite

I didn't really rate any of the Marshalls, the engl was the best I'd say.

The thread title could do with updating to say it' had other amps too. If I hadn't read all the other new threads while having a poo, I probably wouldn't have clicked on this but I'm kinda glad I did.

Interesting how we all hear differently, might be down to what we are listening on I guess

For me the Mosfet 100 was the worst, way too much low bass for this type of sound and excess fizz

The 2205 and 6100 were the best IMO

The peavey was also the best, tighter bass, surprised at how much cab resonance came out in the mix though.

The Engl has a lot of upper harmonics that in this recording I was not too fussed for, might like it on another day.
