WTB : P90 Les Paul, budget £1200

Don't care much about the brand - Gibson, Maybach, Eastman etc all good, but I don't want anything with a thick plasticky finish.
Would prefer a carved top than an LP special but open to a nice one.

Thanks guys, gold top is ok with me but fully gold guitar not really my thing, and I definitely want something routed for real soap bar P90s

You could do much worse than a Vintage V100 Gold Top. I got one off ebay a little over a year ago and its now one of my favourite guitars.

Superb guitar for the money. Definitely not a slim neck tho. Closer to 50s than 60s profile but not big chunky thing.

Thank you, both the vintage and the Epiphone are great guitars I’m sure but I’m really after a thin finish that will age gracefully rather the thick gloopy stuff these guitars normally get ( which is fine sometimes but just not what I’m after here )

Sounds like a Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker might fit the bill. Lots of variants of them, most with P90s, or you could just go with a regular vintage Gibson Melody Maker with P90s, of which there are also many in addition to the regular single coil versions; older sunburst ones are well within your price range and their finishes have usually aged nicely, or will do so if it's a newer one. I can certainly recommend Melody Makers - I have three of them and they are great.

As someone else suggested, there are a number of Gold Top clones out there which would do the job sound wise, some of which are unbelievably inexpensive, but as you say, most of them are covered in treacle in terms of their finish, most notably the one I bought the other day which is currently winging its way to me - a Fazley Midas. That thing has more tacky gold finish on it than a gold bar wrapped in Ferrero Rocher wrappers lol, but apparently they are great if the reviews are to be believed, which prompted my curiosity purchase. Guess I'll find out.

One thing to bear in mind with P90s, is that you may have to arse about with the pots to get the sound you want. Technically a P90 is a single coil, albeit a beefier sounding one than the single coils you find on Fenders, so a lot of the time, P90 fitted guitars have 250k pots to back the brightness off a bit, but if you actually want them to sound bright, you might prefer to stick 500k pots in there. Or you could go mental and put 1000k pots in there and make records which only bats can hear.

Thanks for the suggestions ! Think I'm after something as close to full fat LP as possible with trap inlays and / or binding etc, the Eastman SB56 and Tokai LS198S that have been suggested look very good I have to say.
Maybe some Gibson Studio tribute could do the job too though I'd be a bit more concerned about possible build issues on those

You basically want a Gibson LP with P90s. Why not just save up a bit more and get something that delivers exactly the sound and look you want?

No I'm not attached to the Gibson name at all, I want something LP shaped that is well built, looks and feels nice and is not plasticky.
Sound-wise the right pickups in pretty much any such guitars will work so I'm not worried about that part.

That's exactly the sort of thing I'm after for a P90 guitar; I loved the '1955' one they did a while back, but I've only seen one going secondhand and they were asking silly money for it. That one you 've linked to doesn't seem to be available here in the UK, though...
