I don't think they're ugly, objectively speaking, but all that frippery looks wrong on an SG.  An SG's a chunk of mahogany with a small scratchplate.

Corrected for my own preference ;)

    They're a bit OTT.

    I don't hate them.

They look right up my street. But not right up my bank account.
The Epiphone version will be affordable.

  • I like them. I’d sooner have one of them than an R9.

Oooh, hello.  It's neither an Epiphone nor a Murphy Lab, it's not even "two bits of wood bolted together".
This is a whole new avenue of exploration in the "guitars today are too expensive" debate.

I think they look ace and I'd happily have one!

But then again, I think I missed the memo defining the strict criteria about what an SG is and should always be.

You're just not opinionated enough for this game...  ;)

Might as well get an LTD Viper instead.

Can't say I've ever required the two extra frets on my SG in the last 20 years.
Maybe not, but they could've squeezed them in, and then you'd be free to ignore 'em.
Probably a gap in the market for an adjustable neck guitar; it slides out from the body an inch or so to reveal a couple of extra frets as and when required, much like those extendable dinner tables.

Well, I guess it could work if it was fretless....

Not a big worry with my playing. I don't even tune them in anymore.

Jokes aside, I'm not keen on the SG supremes. I always felt the most appealing SGs are the very basic ones, such as the fadeds and specials.

I think they look awesome, especially getting rid of the fugly-as-sin topmount jack socket; I mean, Iommi was asking Gibson to put a 24-fret fingerboard on them in about 1970, that gap never made any sense and the little plastic plate in there looked fiddly and messy to my eyes (ironically, the SG is about the only Gibson design on which I actually quite like the pickguard; I take 'em off LPs immediately).

Prices are of course ridiculous, though

    Exactly.

I own RG550s and Custom 24s, they all look fine with the extra couple of frets. The SG looks a little off with them though (to me at least)
Much as I've bemoaned the tenon cover, or the gap between the pickup and the neck on a batwing, it's definitely one of those little details that helps define the overall look of the guitar, even though nothing else changes when you swap it for extra frets.

And SGs do look a bit odd without a pickguard, too.
As a long time SG player,I quite like the SG being the slightly peculiar family member. You just know it's the family member most likely to be found drunk in the front garden.
