GAS and ageing.....

What's Hot

My 1st Gibson was a wine red L-6S deluxe which I bought s/h from Andertons in the early 80s - the J Hulke years! - and cost £200. I was in my 30s at the time.
Now this (link below) is at Guitar Village just down the road from me. I know it says walnut in the link but you will see it is wine red and exactly the same as the one I had, except for the replaced knobs.....and 10x price!

But NO it's time to be SENSIBLE....
I'm old now (70 in June) and I sold the first one for a reason, which was the board seemed a little narrow for my taste.
I've got quite enough guitars and should rotate them more.
Having another would mean finding space for it, insuring and worrying about it etc, and it's just another guitar.

If I go and try it I may end up buying it.  YOLO, it would be a nice 70th birthday present, and of course I can think of many other reasons why this should be an essential purchase.  But I need to be getting shot of gear, not buying more, at my age.

Bah...   :s

Ah go on, buy it.  You're only young once.

You don’t seem quite old enough to grow up and be sensible quite yet.

The time to worry is if SENSIBLE becomes SENILE, but then you’ll probably not know how many guitars you’ve got.

I'm in my early 50s. I am highly likely to never gig again.

But what do I have a real yearning to buy?

A proper Marshall plexi. And a variac and a Fryette PS-2 to actually make it usable, and a good 2x12.
Absolutely stupid desire, but I cannot shake it at the moment.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

It's a Gibson.  It could be half an inch wider or narrower than the previous one.

I'm just coming up to 60 and it doesn't feel like the new 50, it just feels old...
But that's veering off-message in this thread.... go for it!

Genuine question - What has age got to do with whether you should or shouldn’t be buying stuff?

Even if you do gig it, even with an attenuator, it's obsolete. I gigged my Marshall Bluesbreaker combo (mic'd) in a big bar with full PA and resident sound man last night. High Treble volume was on 2, Normal volume just below 2, and I was backing off on the guitar volume more often than I normally do.

My dad is 62 and treated us to a lovely conversation about how he wasn’t buying things anymore and was starting to sell because it’s not fair on us who will have to sell it when he’s dead.

The Fryette PS-2 will actually get a Plexi down to line level. It works differently to mere attenuators. It gets the amp down to line level and then uses it's own flat / clean power amp to get it back to the volume you need.

Everything on 10 but at whisper volume is possible with the PS-2.

I don’t. At 62 he could potentially have another 40 or so years left. I know plenty of people well into their 70s who still regularly perform.

Hopefully he’ll be retired within five years, will have paid off any mortgage, and will have time on his hands. Buy nice stuff, go on holidays, do the things you want to do. Better this than selling stuff because you’re worried that the kids will have to tidy up after you.

Yeah, but people have different life experiences which affect their mindset on these things.

I'm still not saying the OP shouldn't buy this L6-S.

Not as silly as the price of the natural-finish '81 Strat they have. The L6-S isn't Gibson's finest hour, but it's unlikely to be as badly-made, toneless or even heavy as that Fender... you can see the gaps in the neck pocket from here space.
