What's Hot

Anyone partake this year?

After swearing off it last year, due to a lack of luck getting what I was after and horrific pricing... this year my local store had all the stuff I was looking for in and it was a bit cheaper (shout out to Spun Out Northampton)... in case anyone was wondering I picked up...

Mansun - Little Kix
Pulp - Intro
Verve - No Come Down
Suede - Autofiction Live
Lightning Seeds - Pure EP
Supergrass - Kiss of Life is 20 EP

Anyone else queue up to partake??

As far as I'm aware I don't have any local record stores.  If there are any, they probably specialise in dub, reggae, house, R&B or hip hop so there's not going to be much for me.

I think they do try to get RSD as "cross-genre" as possible.

I'd swear they do 50-60% of their sales at my local on that one day - the queue was almost an hour (although some came out with what looked like 20-30 albums).

My mate Marcia owns out local one (and was interviewed by Craig Charles on 6 Music yesterday ). She said today that they take a months worth of takings on record store day but they have to pay out around £15k up front to get the stock in

I meant to go, but had family stuff to sort out. So will have to pickup remnants online tonight/tomorrow.

Must be a total crap-shoot what to stock up.  The stuff I got was probably an easy choice for the store, all pretty popular among people my age... but some of the more obscure stuff... don't get it in and alienate a punter, get it in and it doesn't sell then you are carrying stock that won't sell.

Every day is record shop day.

This idea of having "days" gets worse and worse.

    It would appear not.

RSD has been a massive success in pushing the local music shop back into the view of record buyers - ultimately as gimmicky as it is, it's probably helped save dozens of shops across the country.

When big players like, well, Amazon stack the deck in their favour, and HMV seem focussed on selling back-catalogue for £40 a pop ( seriously saw a dull best of Dire Straits in there today... £37.99... best of Bruce Springsteen... £39.99.. piss takers) somebody needs to be looking out for the little guy...

Shame it’s become and absolute sham that gets abused by the touts getting multiple people to queue up and buy stuff for them.

Last year was probably the final time I’ll bother to queue up. The prices are eye-watering, and most of the stuff I’m after doesn’t sell out by midday anyways.

I had no idea it was on until after it finished, which was annoying as I haven't been to one before. I'd have liked a few records on the list, too. Nevertheless, I managed to order Jessie Ware's Tough Love online – it'll replace the one I foolishly got rid of along with the rest of my collection I sold a few years ago.

I’ve just never been one to get involved in this. It’s the sort of nonsense that makes me resent even owning records.

That takes care of your Taylor Swift and Foo Fighters exclusives, no question.  Though if you are really after a very straight Bee Gees cover by the Foos... it's on Spotify.

As long as your tastes are slightly more obscure than that though... you should be OK.

One of my all time favourites.  Nick Saloman is a prolific songwriter and guitarist. Has released 25ish LPs over the years. Well worth a listen.

    I don’t like RSD.
Elitist “Limited edition no-one else has” nonsense. If the music is good enough, it should be out there for everyone to have access to*, and charging a fortune for old rope dressed up in a new colour of vinyl, with the emotional blackmail of ‘support your local independent record shop’ added on top? Not for me.

*I’m not saying it should be free, just to be clear here.

    You know you're right.

These days, you should be able to subscribe to some kind of service that delivers music digitally for a reasonable monthly fee.

If only there were ONE service like this, or even DOZENS of services like this.

Then there would be no need for physical media at all, people would just collect it for fun if they wanted to and could afford it and if they didn't/couldn't would still have access to it...

Actually sounds something like paradise, bet people would bitch and moan about it if it existed though...

EDIT: to be clear - the argument I quote only applies if music was restricted to people who can and do pay whatever people want to charge for a piece of physical media, or EXACTLY how the music industry worked before the illegal downloading and then later streaming boom - consumers these days have a far better deal than they ever did - so if the industry tries to make a few quid back with coloured vinyl once a year - I call that 100% fair - nobody is obliged to do it to hear the music.

The Paramore and David Byrne covering each others songs was brilliant I thought.

Surely, RSD appeals more to the collectors and is, to some extent, built around the fear of missing out. Either way, I know vinyl is overpriced for the most part, but it's an enjoyable hobby, and there are worse things to spend your money on. If you budget and be sensible, it's no different to any pastime that requires dipping into your pockets and parting with your hard-earned.
