Henry has always been very politically active but mostly on what he sees as cases of injustice rather than economics. I don't think Lydon has ever really expressed any economically left-wing opinions, in interview or lyrics, without going into whatever else he has going on these days. Neither of them really have the same association with anti-consumerism that Joe did.

The Joe Strummer Foundation presumably has the rights to the use of the name, so hopefully a significant chunk of this will go towards them or possibly Jail Guitar Doors. Considering the causes the JSF supports I think most of us would have fewer issues with that.

Joe Strummer went to a private boarding schooling, his Dad was a Diplomat.

Indeed so, but that doesn't disqualify one from holding certain political views does it?

His mum was a nurse. His dad was a civil servant and he went to a private boarding school because the government paid the fees because of his fathers job meaning he was overseas. Neither of his parents came from money and there’s no reason to think that he was some Bullingdon Club type adopting a disingenuous persona.

Should he have spoken in a Turkish accent because he was born there?

Depends how you look at it. 20,000 US $ is roughly ...15 grand... right?
Take a look at Henry Rollins' vinyl collection...which must be approaching that?
As a punk rock icon he doesn't seem to have an issue with consumerism?
John Lydon lives in Malibu... etc..
Theres Something Hard in There A Henry Rollins experience long before
    Wowza - go Henry !!

Er, there is a massive divide between having a passion/interest, and consuming tons of expensive shit to show off. I hardly think Henry is the latter.

    I take it you're not a JS fan :-)

As it happens, neither am I (from a musical perspective at least) but an accident of birth shouldn't make your political views any less valid.

Didn't do Tony Benn's career much harm or dilute his message.

    * EDIT - the guitar is preposterous.

I'm getting deja vu, hasn't there already been a discussion about a Joe Strummer Tele?  I think perhaps it was someone debating whether he should put the stickers on a Mexican version.

Yeah but that was a mexican made one. This one's twenty grand!

I'm so intrigued about who is going to love Joe Strummer so much that they'd spend £20k on this guitar but not love him so much that they feel icky about it at the same time.

"Other details include the wing string tree with tall metal spacer."

Now that I know that, I'm seeing what funds I can scrape together...  Gotta have that string tree.

so anybody buying an expensive guitar is just ... "showing off"... and doesn't have a passion for / interest in the instrument?

It's a new production guitar, not some rare valuable stuff. Equivalent would be Henry buying Void/Faith 7" 2023 reissue for 1000 bucks.

I too went to boys private boarding school - paid for by my parents ... my opinion on the matter wasn't asked for ... I doubt Joe's was.
As a kid ... you do what your parents tell you is best for you.

My education broadened my mind to the point where as  soon as I could be I was a card carrying member of the Communist party and playin in a punk band ... and a member Anti Nazi League. I spent a while homeless and lived in the odd squat ...

My views have mellowed a little over the years ... I'm no longer to the left of Lenin ... but I don't use the word Tory without the suffix 'scum' :-)

So tell me why you think what your parents jobs or where you go to school dictates your social conscience?

My father worked for the government on rocket research and my mother was a housewife by the way.
