Its a warning of an impending nuclear exchange. I wonder what the butterfly is?
    Hint to the navy maybe?

    It's an Admiral butterfly.
    No - it's a Monarch.
So it's even more of a lame symbol than we thought. Christ almighty. If they don't want to seem like they are stuck in the past, why bother having portraits at all of them?

It's happened to us all. You go over the lines a bit, try to straighten it out and make it worse, then before you know it...

    Nah, I like it.
Although I'd say it's more pink than red.

Apparently Charles wanted the butterfly to reflect his lifelong concern for the environment

    From the artist...
"When I started this project, His Majesty The King was still His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and much like the butterfly I've painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as the subject's role in our public life has transformed."

In his description of the portrait, Yeo elaborates how the butterfly, which is often, he says, a ‘symbol of metamorphosis and rebirth,’ is also intended to provide ‘a visual contrast to the military steeliness of the uniform and sword.’

The monarch butterfly is also suggestive of King Charles III’s environmental activism, being one of the migratory species most affected by climate change.

Fuck me. I like it! And I don’t support the monarchy. But that’s pretty fucking rad.

As said its not a bad bit of art and I thought it was a big step up from some other royal portraits.

That's pretty much my take on it, too.

Aesthetically speaking, I think the stylized background is too much at odds with the 'traditional' rendering of the hands and face. It would be a bit like finding a perfectly accurate depiction of a face or a cat or dog in the middle of an abstract Picasso-style backdrop. Maybe an artist might make some kind of statement by doing such a thing, but the overall aesthetic effect is odd and not in a good way. It reminds me a bit of that gif in which Homer Simpson gradually disappears backwards into a hedge, his face being the last thing to go!

I like it. I have zero interest in the 'royals' but it is an excellent piece of art from what I've seen of it.
Brilliant likeness and I really can't be arsed to compare it with photos.
I prefer the artist to the king. Pretty sure I saw a similar one on portrait artist of the year with the red background and such.

There are no fat fingers in it, I'm going to assume that was by decree.

    Up next, bald king willy...
