Plymouth City centre shop Fender NOS shocker.

What's Hot
This morning i did my usual bimble around Wants 2nd hand shop (opposite Newmarket pub in town-it's the first shop from my bus stop). I was looking at a literally mint 2007 (neck pick up blue sticker still on) Baja tele (£600)...Hmmm. Just above it 2 mint; i mean mint 2007 Highway one strats- same MO: all hang tags. stickers etc literally brand new (£699). "Who buys a guitar in 2007 and sells it (to a 2nd hand shop at presumably the lowest possible price) 17 years later having clearly done nothing with it?" I asked the guy behind the counter. "Have a look at this" he says. Opens a tweed case with an absolutely mint CS 2007 (not sure the significance of that year-were a load of Fenders nicked back then?) Fiesta Red 60's strat. (2k). There are at least 2 other  NOS CS strats in there for (i think) £1800. Apparently there is an individual known to them who "has a barn full of guitars" who comes in from time to time with these gems.
Unfortunately I'm moving house (and country) so couldn't entertain. I  have absolutely no connection whatever with the store or people therein. Although i did buy an acoustic off them a few years ago. They seem v honest and decent and have always had a few interesting things in there.
But...Got me thinking ..2007?? Anyone have an idea about this or is it just a viz like eccentric millionaire with GAS??

    Don't drag @viz into this

Puzzling, isn't it.  My first thought would have been possible counterfeit guitars, especially if the 2nd-hand shop didn't particularly specialise in musical instruments, but given that they seem honest, that 2nd-hand shops do tend to handle a lot of guitars, and that the Internet is a readily available resource for research, I doubt they would have 3 fakes hanging there.

Stolen?  Being a naturally suspicious person that would have been my 2nd thought, but would you hang three stolen guitars in full view of people that are quite likely to search the serial numbers online and find records like facebook posts giving details of their stolen instruments in the hope they turn up?  No, I would have them "under the counter" while I quietly lined up a buyer that was unlikely to do any checks.  Bought unwittingly without knowing their history?  Perhaps.

The location of the store is probably too far away for CavemanGrogg to have been selling items from his secret secure storage location

The CS is below market value, even given we’re in tough times and it’s NOS. I’d be slightly wary on that basis and would want to inspect it to ensure it’s genuine.

I knew a bloke who worked on the oil rigs, used to buy guitars and store them then go back to the rigs. When I asked him about it he said some people buy paintings to look at, I buy guitars

I’m sure they’re doing sale or return and taking a cut. I sold a guitar in Wunjo that way, they just agreed a price with me, hung it on their wall for a while and sold it. The only tricky thing was that they didn’t tell me they’d sold it until some months after they actually had.

    Yep - hmm….shall I pull a sicky tomorrow….

That’s a heck of an impressive range of second hand Fenders, with humane pricing too.

A concern would be the possible lack of hardcases or certificates as they do not mention having them on the listings..

OP mentions the red one has a case. It says hardcase included on at least one of the other listings.

Maybe it's a liquidated business's assets that had been stashed/found. I had a similar thing with my Mongoose bike, a 2009 model bought from John Pye auctions in 2013. It was one of many and they all had a defunct dealer sticker.

There’s a Les Paul Standard for £1300 which rings alarm bells.

As someone who has recently been through a protracted issue with the Police relating to a low price guitar that subsequently turned out to be stolen, if it appears too good to be true, it probably is.

Assuming they are genuine, they seem very well priced indeed from a shop.

They do sell mostly musical kit and hi-fi in that branch.  As for being stolen, I haven't sold anything to them since I was a student 30+ years ago but at least back then it was a pretty informal arrangement - basically you had to sign a "this is my own property and definitely not nicked" waiver form (and I'm sure Mr M Mouse featured quite regularly).  Not that I felt that the people were dodgy I should add.  The process might well be more strict these days.

    Yeah it's a shithole...

That said, I bet some Fretboarders haven't posted tonight because they are driving there.
