Object of Desire required

Although a player of very meagre talents I've long promised myself that one day I'd buy myself a 'quality' guitar, something along the lines of a US Fender or Gibson rather than my current Squiers, Mexican Fenders, Harley Bentons etc.

However I have realised that my preference tonally is for a P90 at the neck and a PAF like bucker at the bridge, which neither seem to offer production models (I may be wildly wrong). In general I like wider, fatter necks and prefer a hard tail. I prefer a more traditional look than anything pointy.

So my question to you more knowledgable players, is what out there meets my specs and can become my new object of desire? I'd prefer not to be buying a stock guitar and swapping pickups if possible. Lets say budget of up to £3k ?

Isn't there a Duesenberg or two in that pickup format, and also the truly hideous Gary Moore BFG Les Paul?

A Nik Huber Krautster would be top of my list to try, or a Feline LP Junior style with the pickup combination you want.

Used Fender Custom Shop are really very good too for about £2500 but you'll not get the pickup combination you want as stock. A Telecaster Deluxe would be a good base for a pickup swap though.

PJD and Nik Huber are the first two companies I think of when it comes to high end P90/humbucker guitars. I have a Krautster II and if you like the big necks too then honestly I think they're some of the best you can get. Brand new you might struggle but sometimes see them for under 3k second hand. In fact I've been contemplating selling mine in favour of an all-P90 guitar I've seen but I'm very torn about it.

A Les Paul Special (perhaps VOS etc) and swap the bridge pickup for something like a Seymour Duncan Antiquity Mini? 

Would be pretty much fitting the bill.

A totally no frills PJE Macon Junior will 100% do it. Paf/p90, thicker neck, traditional. Look basic but feel and sound incredible.

Used Eggle or Krautster – but if you're not sure about dropping £3k, a PRS SE Chris Robertson would allow you to keep most of your powder dry and tick your boxes. Solid bird inlays, which aren't my cup of tea, but very good guitars.

The Knaggs Kenai J and Keya J are available with P90 neck/HB bridge combos. With or without flat maple top as of last week too, although I think the new maple top version will be above your budget.

(The original carve top Kenai is available in that config too of course but it would be *significantly* more money!)

Thanks all, so far the Krautster is the most enticing and was actually already on my short list. That or a Feline flat top Blues Cat with mixed Pickups. They're local to me also.

In terms of what might pop up used, and beyond what's already been mentioned, your closest Gibson stock option is a Les Paul BFG, although you may not like the finish (BFG = Barely Finished Guitar).

If you really want some option paralysis, take any dual-humbucker guitar of your liking and put a humbucker-sized P90 in the neck.

But yeah, I'd be going Krautster were I in your shoes!

Gibson have done at least two LP's beside the BFG n that configuration, but they're both rare and neither cheap. The Lou Pallo signature and the Sergio Vallin signature. My favourite is probably the Pallo:

Another vote for PJE or Feline if you are spending a lot - I've got both and they are very good guitars. I dont like the stock PJE humbucker but thats a tase thing
