NGD, that’s G for Gretsch

I know it’s all about the Mater Built Gs around here at the mo. Absolutely drool worthy they all are too but here’s a thread for a humble Japanese built model

It’s taken a while to dot the Ts and cross the Is on this one but I now have this glorious 53 Vintage Select Duo Jet. And just like the 59 VS, the attention to the details of producing a really authentic sounding and feeling repro of the era is so impressive. This one is light as feather, clear as a bell and resonant as a……… as a really resonant thing.

So to mark the happy occasion, we snuck off for a little photo time.

    Beautiful!

Nice that it's light too. I'm always shocked that despite the very extensive chambering, the Jets can be very heavy - or is that just the Electromatics? There was a local one for sale recently that was 10.5lbs! That's Norlin LP territory!

Anyway. Sorry for the derail. Quite stunning and I hope it sounds as good as it looks.

No derail at all. The two electros I have are both quite a bit heavier, not 10.5 crazy but way off the feather weight 53. And in no surprise to anyone, the much lighter guitar is the more resonant and better sustaining of the three.

This is a beautiful sounding guitar. Those pickups are fabulous.  I think I actually prefer them to Filtertrons, and I LOVE filtertrons.

These Vintage Select Jets are among the absolute best Gretsches I’ve ever played.  This is the best sounding one I’ve played

It doesn't come much cooler than a black Duo Jet in my eyes. Congrats.

If the G in NGD is for Gretch then the N is for nice.

    Amazing photos too.

  • Nothing humble about the Japanese models, they’re up there with the best guitars you can buy in that price range

    Oops, post cut short.

Anyway, HNGD. That's a fabulous guitar.

I had a 53VS at the same time as my Gallup sig Duo Jet. Both were identical construction with the same extensive '50s' chambering but the 53 was 7lbs and the Gallup was 8lbs. I never figured out why. Both were superb guitars.

Great photography Daz. You should take it up as a living lol

Interesting  ... do your Dynasonics have polished top magnets like my 1953 ones, or do they have raw alnico 5 like my other pair of modern Gretsch Dynasonics?

Below genuine early 50s Dynasonics ... polished magnet tops

Below: Modern replicas by Gretsch with raw topped magnets ... they sound significantly different

They look unpolished to me. It's a 2005 Terada-built model iirc.
