Talk to me about delay pedals?

What's Hot
stickyfiddlestickyfiddle Frets: 27064
I really wanted to cal this "Talk dirty to me" but I have too many drive pedals already...

Anyway, I've sold my Alter Ego X4. It was a brilliant sounding pedal, but didn't do dual rhythmic delays and lack of modulation control was annoying.

Sooo... what else is out there? I've had a Timefactor before and really liked that (big screen and full-dual delays on every mode especially), but the PSU they come with is shite and alternatives power options are really expensive.

Criteria...

I need:
- tap tempo
- multiple storable patches, at least 3, but preferably shitloads
- fully independent dual/stereo delay so I can have one repeat of 1/4 and 3 repeats of dotted 8th at different volumes or whatever

And I'd like:
- digital simulation of analog seems to be the obvious option. I've never actually found a strictly-analog I've got on with, unless there's something analog with digital control (pigtronix maybe?)
- bpm and ms options would be nice
- a proper screen to show parameter values and/or patch names/numbers
- easy to run from basic PSUs - anything that'll daisychain off a Diago is a winner...!

Does this ring any bells other than Timefactor and Timeline?

Failing that, please list any delay pedals you've had and specifically what they do well and badly. Emphasis on the annoying stuff!

The Boss DD-7 might be worth a look, certainly for the tap-tempo (@Drew_FX uses them becasue of this feature.

The DD-6 doesn't do tap tempo, but is a very useable delay.

No such thing as a useable delay without tap. Believe me, I've tried!

Probably even more expensive than a Timeline, though.

Yes, I have the DD-7 and it is certainly less painful than the DD-6 but still not quite user-friendly. What you really need is a telepathic pedal that just know what to do without having to faff.

Until then though, my vote is also for the DD-7. Good value for money.

  • Definitely not buying a DD7. It only ticks 2 of the 7 criteria!!

Works for me, as does the Digitech Digidelay and the VisualSound Axle Grease. But then I'm a kinda "set and forget" type of guy.

The DD6 does do tap tempo, but it doesn't do EXTERNAL tap tempo. You have to hold the switch down for 2 seconds tap it, and then hold it down again to go back to bypass mode. AFAIK.

For your list, I'd say the Nova Delay. It's way better than the Flashback x4 and it's spin offs in terms of tap behaviour.

your list of requests is basically a Boss DD20. Not the most exciting, but bomb proof, and readily available. Does everything you want, too

  • Boss dd-20 or the digitech... Er... Big one. :)

GAk had them fairly well priced recently.

Not sure if it does presets... But it gets you a lot of the way. Decent analogue model, easy tap tempo etc.

  • Forgot about the DD-20. Works best if you get a separate switch for the tap tempo, otherwise IIRC it's the press and hold routine to get to tap tempo mode....ticks everything on the list (I think).

  • That Free the Tone ting looks brilliant. Reminds me of the timetravel thingy in Back to the Future. Haven't watched the demos yet though.

In other news, I've just found this video. This is going to cost me money..

No way, really?! It's got two switches, I assumed you could assign one for tap tempo.

It's why I liked the Nova Repeater a lot. Great sounds, quiet in the effects loop (didn't notice noise up front, but @drew_fx did), dedicated tap tempo and generally easy to use, with several subdivision options.

    No presets though.

Left switch is on/off, right switch scrolls through the pre-sets....or hold to access tap tempo. Easier to hook up a seperate dedicated tap tempo switch.
