Tone, we all say what we like but what actually is it?

Tone isn't in the fingers, it is a variance of darkness relative to the amount of light refracted or absorbed by an object.

Who's Tag ? In response to question of Distortion, I think judging by posts so far, how much gain and FX used does not increase or decrease tone. Tone can be great, clean or overdriven.

Clearly a one word answer isn't likely to box this one off. 'Plectrum, strings, intonation, action', etc are just as much a part of it as 'guitar, amp, fingers', etc.

Years ago, 'tone' was commonly used in relation to acoustics, while 'sound' was commonly used for electrics, as in,"David Gilmour has a great guitar sound".

For me, this is a better description. The 'sound' the listener hears is a combination of a huge number of variables (including mics/mic placement/room acoustics/mic pre-amps/desks/tape compression/DACs, etc).

Clearly the type of guitar will have some influence, but is actually a realitively small part of the whole...

Tone is nothing like a penis. I've never set up my ac30 in a dark alleyway and waited for an unsuspecting lady to walk past, then jumped out and played the solo from we will rock you!
