I don't think the GP meant any distress, he is a temp locum who doesn't know my full medical history. I'd gone to see him about a completely unrelated minor matter, however, I have an interest in Medieval and Islamic studies, and we usually chat a while about religion and his experience as a Muslim GP. I'm sure it was a pragmatic response to a rhetorical question I'd posed that he may have misunderstood.
For my part, the irony wasn't lost; furthermore, with a stretched NHS, and under-staffed, over-subscribed surgery, he is an extremely good GP who address's issues, and shows an attentive interest in his patients needs.
In reflection, I feel it was a misunderstanding. I wouldn't want to lose that ability to have a GP I can trust, whilst having a quick two minute discussion about current cultural attitudes. It akin to two Paracetamol and the Bhagavad Gita - followed by why Saladin and Richard the Lionheart were able to agree on who was to be that weeks victor.
