  • Ok, I have to remember what I got this year.

Springsteen - High Hopes (though it's no Wrecking Ball)
Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There? (listening for the first time as I type)
Taylor Swift - 1989 (don't laugh, it's bloody good pop music)
Ryan Adams - Ryan Adams (there we are, back to credible MOR stuff...)
Gaslight Anthem - Get Hurt (won't win them many new fans but it's really good)
Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways (not their best, but still their second best LP in over a decade)
Gary Clark Jr - Live (miles better than his studio album. Properly captures him at his best)

I want to try to concentrate on things which actually were released this year, or late last year, but there aren't many I can think of:

Mount Salem - Endless (my favourite of the year by a very big margin)
    John Garcia - self titled
    Blues Pills - self titled
    Siena Root - Pioneers
    Coney Hatch - Four
    Winger - Better Days Comin'
    AC/DC - Rock or Bust
Judas Priest - Redeemer of Souls
    Wishbone Ash - Blue Horizon

I'm not even sure I like of all the above, but the list would be ridiculously brief otherwise.  Most of the "new" things I'm still listening to were released two or three years ago, as it turns out.

Beyond those, I've bought lots of reissues, remasters and box sets from the likes of Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Judas Priest, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher and, again, Wishbone Ash (those guys - or their record labels - do love a reissue).

I've bought far too much music this year to count anything older, so of albums actually released in 2014 (and not counting Now That's What I Call Music 87/88/89 ;) ), I have…

King Creosote - From Scotland With Love
Marianne Faithfull - Give My Love To London
    Paulo Nutini - Caustic Love
The Pretty Reckless - Going To Hell
Raye - Welcome To The Winter
    Shakira - Shakira
    U2 - Songs Of Innocence

Of which I would say probably the best is King Creosote, and the most fun is The Pretty Reckless :). Paolo Nutini didn't quite click with me as much as I expected (I prefer Sunny Side Up), Marianne Faithfull is pretty good, and the most disappointing would be U2, although Shakira isn't great by her usual standards. I wouldn't have got Raye's EP at all if it hadn't been recommended on here, and I quite like it.

  • I think the only thing ive bought in 2014 that was a new release was the Wilko Johnson one, so that.

Couple of weeks I went to see a gig by the charming Nicola Farnon with her trio, plus the excellent Alan Barnes on sax/clarinet. And was indeed charmed - bought a few albums, of which I particularly like "Hitting the Right Note" and "A Day at the Market". There really is some great talent on the British jazz scene at the moment.

I've bought a lot in 2014, most have something going for them, but the only ones that stick in my mine as truely good albums are St Vincent, Royal Blood, and Bombay Bicycle Club (which is blooming brilliant and gets my number 1 vote).

I'm glad you said that about Taylor Swift, love the singles from the album so far and was thinking of buying the album, was just was a little concerned that I was turning into a 15 year old girl. I may give it a punt now though......

So far I suspect that only @Deijavoo may be into this stuff but this year I got into the staggeringly beautiful “Shadowplay” by 36. That is a lovely album (although it came out 2013).

I thought “Blue” and “Green” by Solar Fields were great. They came out this year and I’ve played those a lot too.

But the absolute stand out has been “Awake” by Tycho. This is the album I would love to have written if only I could. It’s even got guitar on it :)

  • I forgot about Rival Sons. I would stick that in the list for sure. There's just too many. I bought way too much music. If I spent all the money I spend on music on guitars instead I would probably have an original 59 burst by now...
