That's because Chrome transcodes it. The chromecast only understands MP4 encoded as x264 and AAC audio. If the steam isn't in that format then the streaming service (iplayer, Netflix, plex, or chrome) has to transcode it before chromecast can connect to the stream.

I've just picked a Chromecast up, partly on the strength of the recommendations in this thread. I didn't realise that I could also cast from a laptop, which is great, but what should I use to cast photos and videos directly from the gallery on my Android phone? Allcast? Localcast? Can anyone recommend an app?

@dlm yesterday I used localcast to try that out, it worked well for videos but not so well for photos. Will be interested if you find a good solution
