Sainsbury's Blended Scotch Whisky

What's Hot
My tastes in whisky are usually much more expensive. However I bought this stuff to make Hot Toddy after I caught a nasty sneezy thing from a workmate - wouldn't use Talisker for that! When I tried some on its own I was surprised to find it less like paint stripper than I thought it would.

Or are my taste buds still depressed with the disease?

see, luckily Im completely the opposite....... I cannot bear "expensive"  whisky...........that tastes like TCP to me........... cheaper stuff like White and Mcwhatsit, or tesco own brew....... I much prefer....(dont like bells either)

Will give anything a try, cheers mate.

Talisker is far too smokey for my tastes.

Glenlivet, Old Pultney and (ahem) Yamazaki for me.

  • @Deijavoo you wouldn't like Highland park then. It's smoky (and expensive) but I love it!

I usually like the expensive bit, that's my problem but Talisker, Laphr... Laph..  erm, aye that one and I guess Highland Park now off my list. I love smoked food and I love the taste of cigarettes and cigars but my whisky needs no smoke to my mind.

  • In my mind Talisker = salty/peaty, Laphroaig = peaty/cough mixture, neither were particularly smoky. However, everyone's taste buds react differently ...

Old Pultney tastes like sea water but delicious, it is very salty to me.

But exactly like you say, everyone's taste buds find different things.

I like stuff that's more like Glenmorangie, but I need a couple of pints first to numb my ladymouth.

No, it's reasonable stuff.  Someone did tell me which the distillery is, but I've forgotten

  • Old Pulteney, or Jura Origin or Superstition for me. I don't like Laphroaig or any of the heavily peated stuff, and I can't abide any blended Scotch.

They don't tell you on the label. Its definitely better than Famous Grouse which is the other one I get when I want to make a Hot Toddy, and price/volume the Sainsbury's one is better value too.

Gin - Asda had 1 Ltr Gordons for £15 this weekend which is was handy since I picked 1.8Kg of Sloes on Saturday. 2 Bottles secured before the offer ended, that should be ideal come next autumn when the stuff is nicely matured.

  • Another vote for the cheap stuff here. The expensive stuff is too smooth for me, its nice but it's got no fire. I like my whiskey to have a bit of fight in it. Which is probably why I prefer Bourbon.

  • I'm a Laphroaig / Talisker man myself.

Not a fan of blends usually.

    I like them Peaty.

  • Sainsbury's white rum is very good too (the standard one not the Basics)  Better flavour imo than Bacardi.

Bacardi turns my stomach (poor experience at a barn party when I was 17...) but love white rum after a jaunt to Cuba. Principally because i) it gets me twatted in litre bottle form  ii) tastes nowt like Bacardi.

Blended is fine for cooking and mixing with other stuff but that's it.

I like lagavulin usually but my current squeeze is glenfarclas 105 for a change.
