Coffee Grinder Recommendations

danodano Frets: 1595
I thought I'd see a thread on here about these but the search doesn't turn up anything, so here we goes....

Any recommendations for a bean grinder, weekend use mostly for grinding for espressos (in a Gaggia Classic) and slightly coarser for a cafetiere ? Don't have a Moka pot anymore but may have one in teh future so need to bear that in mind.

For proper espresso the Internet wisdom is that you need a burr grinder as it was to be very finely ground, with all ground pieces the same size and without overheating the grounds during the process. It all depends on budget really, a decent one is over £100. If the budget is less and it's just for weekend use then a quality hand grinder like the Hario one will be your best bet (all according to Internet wisdom rather than my own trials of different grinders!)

absolutely not in anyway shape or form is that good enough to grind for a Gaggia..

if you want to spend £20 then get a Hario Slim hand grinder. cheapest electric is something like the Iberital MC2.

head over to Coffee Forums UK and you will get some sound advice and have a look in their classifieds section.

    Hand grinder all the way!

They are all decent...the rhino one is quite good and not too expensive.

I agree about the espresso grind, it really needs to be finer than the usual grind, otherwise you don't get the full flavour,

This thread? http://thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/13615/recommend-me-a-coffee-maker. I can report that I'm still happy with the Bodum burr grinder

Moka pot you will get away with a cheap blade grinder, although I still would not recommend it, good for nuts and the like but not for coffee... a burr grinder is much MUCH better and essential to get a fine consistent grind for a high pressured shot.

A couple minutes after seeing this thread I noticed this new post http://gearpatrol.com/2013/02/25/grind-it-out-10-best-coffee-grinders/ it's a US website but might give you some useful information.

I have a Gaggia MDF (which I use with a Gaggia Classic also). 6-7 years of almost daily use and it's doing fine. It has 34 grind settings and I normally have it on 8-10 for espresso (depending on the beans I have), so the higher settings would be ideal for cafetieres (or filter machines). The doser isn't always accurate if the grounds are running low in the compartment (just keep it topped up to overcome this problem) but is very convenient. Easy to take apart for cleaning and spare parts should be easy to find if needs be.

And if you don't have them already, get a good metal tamper, a blank backflushing basket and some Puly Caff to keep your Classic clean on the inside.
