I thought they were a Goldie looking chain type of thing the first time I heard them, turns out they take it all very seriously.

Exactly what I thought, then that slow realisation of them taking it all seriously happens and all interest is lost.  All a bit sad, really.  It's not even a new concept, loads of people have done that sort of thing before, and better.

(I actually like a bit of GLC now and then - discovered them when I bought a used car with one of their albums jammed stuck in the tape player. :)) )
-- Before you ask, no, I am in no way, shape or form related to Fuzzdog pedals, I was Fuzzdog before Fuzzdog were Fuzzdog.  Unless you want to give me free crap, then I'm related to whatever the hell you like! --

I thought they were a joke band?

    Classic lyrics mind!

"Fish fingers take the batter off" and " BABa Cracksheep" are personal highlights

  • I adore them.  Can't wait to see them live this month.  Key Markets is an excellent album - and a step forward musically.

  • I'm not that impressed with Key Markets.

Austerity Dogs is my pick of their commercial releases.

I'm seeing them again on this tour as well. Bigger venue so hopefully the levels will be sorted.

  • Eucalyptus...you can...

I think it's a terrific album and really shows a willingness to move on.

Please find me a guitar band that's half as interesting, @Chuffola - I've not listened to anybody as much as Sleaford Mods in years.  Absolutely terrific; genuine, relevant, clever and funny.

I could say the same about Vai, Satriani, etc.

    But Octatonic would be righter!

There's stuff I don't particularly like but Sleaford Mods I just don't get.

Maybe that's good, if my parents were alienated by punk or something (I don't suppose they actually cared that much, but as a for example) maybe I should be alienated by something but if it's just middle aged men acting like drunks on a bus then that's a bit disappointing.

  • If you don't get it, that's fine. But to describe it as 'middle-aged men acting like drunks on a bus' is like describing jazz as mindless parping or heavy metal as tuneless noise.

Well, people use those descriptions because that's what they hear, and for Sleaford Mods that's what I hear. If there's any inner beauty or depth to it then it's gone right over my head. My drunks on a bus comment is a cheeky sideswipe at it, I know, but it's also there to explain how confusing I find it.
I've kept coming back to this Discussion because I did want the penny to drop but it clearly hasn't.

Sure, you can say anything you like- and I'm not going to try to justify the music of Vai or Satriani, but at least they have worked to be able to do something that is very, very difficult to a pretty top level.

It isn't even a guitar music versus electronic music argument.
I just don't think it is any good- there is so much more music I'd rather be checking out, electronic or not.

If you like it then more power to you.

If you don't get it, that's fine.
I get it- it isn't exactly oblique and hard to understand.
It is an expression of working class frustration but directed through a bunch of characters that are represented as scally/junkie/unemployed/no-hoper/loser types in a midlands accent.
    So.. .understood, just disliked.

  • That's fair enough. I do fully understand why people don't get it. My brother in law is baffled but, for me, there's an essential energy that just resonates as loud as anything has in years.

Never heard of them until I saw them on JH but really enjoyed their punkish energy poetry.

They really mean it and have more excitement going on than many bands nowadays.

Agree with all this and can understand the bag of spunk comment.

I listen to a lot of different music and SM just happen to be one in the collection.
