"The batsman's Holding, the bowler's Willey."

You beat me to it, what a classic!

According to Wisden it's a myth.

No it's not. I remember it well. 1st Test Brisbane 1979.

Willey was in the gulley- wet wicket...Gooch batted for 3 hrs for 18.

Equally funny was when NZ was playing and Henry Blofeld was commentating on Fleming and Bond.*

Another statistical anomoly- Holmes and Moriaty playing for Wales (rugby) together in the 80's, and once in an SA provincial game Lamb c Kourie bowled Rice.

EDIT: Ian Fleming lived next door to Henry Blofeld's Dad. He used the name as he felt it a 'fine name for a villain"

There was a New Zealand commentator, who, legend has it, was fired after saying this about Kiwi test player Bob Cunis: "hmmm, Cunis, neither one thing nor the other".

I heard Blowers refer to himself as "Blow job" fairly recently - Tufnell was in the TMS box at the time and completely lost it.

Any more Classic lines out there?

West Ham Vs Liverpool (I think) and Julian Dicks was having an outstanding match.

Commentator - Dicks is all over the park, it's like there's 11 Dicks on the field

There's always Botham failing to get his leg over.  The best bit of that was Brian Johnstone and Agnew dissolving afterwards.

Not commentator classics but there are some classic sledges:

It's missing the legendary Eddo Brandes / Glenn McGrath one though

Re sledges- When I 'came out' to the cricket world it was 2004. Richmond played High Wycombe the very next day in the national knock out.

I was day dreaming at midwicket (the inner ring field) when Nick Armstrong, our seamer (Lincs Minor County) bowled, the batters took a quick single to me...

    Nick:

"James, nice and tight in the ring please..."

    Much mirth.

Next ball, Nick bowled a horrible half track long hop and was smashed into the railway line.

    Me:

"Work on your length and make it harder mate."

    The game was virtually stopped....

But you're not an average cricketer. The average cricketer doesn't spend an amount equivalent to the GDP of Moldova every six months on guitar gear :)

NB: international cricket is so dull at the minute. Watching the Windies now bowling like pub cricketers in South Africa is painful.
