Load and Reload are my faves, but I also like And Justice For All, but St. Anger is total bollocks.

I personally never had an issue with the AJFA production. I've heard everyone and their dog saying it but I've not noticed any problem myself.

The bass sounds just fine, It closely follows the guitars but it's there. It's not deep and boomy as usual but bright and very tight, so as to not smother the intricate details of the rhythm guitar. I assure you if you took away the bass track from the album you'll definitely hear the difference!

The bass was all but removed, to allow for Lars' snare sound. I'd love to hear the album mixed properly.

Ride The Lightning is probably their best, followed closely by KEA and MoP.

Yup, me too. No pun intended but I love the metallic sound it has, very direct. Never listened to Load or Reload (?) Death Magnetic is good IMO, Master, Ride and Kill em All are my teenage years. Black album got stick for being "commercial" but fuck all the naysayers great album.
Garage Days revisited is also worth hunting out.

Just to buck the trend, the $5.98 EP - and THEN work backwards.

Master of Puppets first, as a matter of urgency.
Ride the Lightning is also excellent.
The Black album is a very different sound but also excellent.

I can take or leave the rest.

  • Why can't they just do another 'Master'

I mean, how hard can it be?

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

If you want to listen to master, listen to master! They've been there and done that, they neither can nor want to do another one. The reason why Metallica still exists today is because they never chase the past, but look to the present, and make music they feel the need to make.

A lot of "fans" say St. Anger is the worst album they ever made, but I say it's the most important album they ever made. Without it they probably would have broken up back in 2002. It was a way for them to release and deal with their anger and frustration. That's why it sounds the way it does and it fulfilled their needs perfectly.

Instead of treating it as a failed master of puppets, next time you are feeling down and pissed off, try listening to St Anger again. It might be something of an epiphany.

    My god. AWESOME.

And shit the bed, I always forget just how damn great Hetfield is. Just the most amazing rhythm player.

The problem with St.Anger is it's third rate. A pile of Arse.

I'm not comparing it to MOP, SA is not even as good as Load/Reload which could have been made by any rock band with little talent.

That's the great thing about Metallica. They're not trying to win a popularity contest. They don't care if people love or hate their music. They make music for themselves and if you are lucky enough to appreciate it, then it's your gain.

That's fair enough. I'm not saying you should like them, I'm just saying I count myself lucky for being able to appreciate them.

When Rick Rubin produced Death Magnetic he asked to remember how they felt when they made MoP. What he should have said is remember how you felt when you saw Rainbow and met Dio after. How you felt when you got the first Maiden album, the first Angel Witch album, the Bleak House 7, Diamond Head ep etc. What made you want to start a band.

Listen to the first Flotsam & Jetsam album. They could have made much better use of Newsted as a writer.

I need to rip it for a CD burn.

What's a good app for that?

Or of course you could simply forget Metallica and listen to Queensryche instead.
