British Councils at international property fairs

What's Hot

Erm, just what gives them the right to sell off what is essentially all of our land to foreign investors, so that they can boost property prices and rent properties back to us?

It's another form of anti peasant Inclosure Act.

Just saw Newham on the TV, changed a bit, skyscrapers going up everywhere.  I know they are one of the poorest Councils in the UK and people were getting socially cleansed to the Thames Gateway when I was there as the developers had a strangle hold, but this is nuts.

This foreign investment speculation is creeping outside of London.

It's is scary.

Apparently the new model for the future adopted by Councils nationwide is tenancy only property owned by foreign companies who don't pay tax.

all the councils are skint, guess they're selling off the family jewels in a hope they can keep the whole charade going for a few more years.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

  • UK's going down the pan! Housing is the biggest scandal that just wont die right now. Probably cheap compared to those in England but we looked at basic homes at the weekend which started at £285k. Ridiculous! Sorely tempted to pick up sticks and finally make the move to Munich.

£285,000 for a basic house, Jesus Christ. That'd get you a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with a big garden here. Or a building plot with planning and enough left to build a 4 bed detached on it.

How much would they be in Munich?

Fwiw 285k would buy you a 4 or 5 bed detached house if you go past Edinburgh City bypass by a few miles in almost any direction...

Jeepers- I live in another finiancal zone I reckon....so if anyone wants to make an offer on my 4 bedroom 3 storey terraced house in Shepherds Bush, right by Westfield, then I'll take offers over £1.9m. And then I can go and buy Shropshire.

Just to expand on the point about taxes - it pees me off when people drop in phrases like "foreign companies who don't pay tax" into any economic argument just because it helps to build a picture of them as baddies. It's not based on fact. In fact, It is bollocks. If you earn rental income on UK property, you pay UK tax on it. Not only that, but if you don't get HMRC approval to receive rents gross, the onus is on the tenant - in this case the local council - to withhold income tax on the rent payment and pay it over to HMRC.

You could buy Margate for £285,000.

    Not that you'd want to.

However, the clean up bill would be significantly larger.

Taxation is higher in the USA, but overall cost of living is cheaper, but they don't have an NHS.  Basic medicare will patch you up though.

Mind you, even with medicare, you don't wait 13 hours for an ambulance.
