Anyone on here rich with unlimited GAS funds?

What's Hot
Just daydreaming about how it must feel when you have enough money to buy any gear you want. Noel Gallagher for instance started Oasis playing Epi Les Paul's and 2 years down the line had the ability to literally buy any guitar in the world, how amazing would that feel?

I'm thinking I'd be in danger of splurging to the point where acquisition became primary over playing.

Hmm.....would be nice though.......

Nope, far from it, but I think being able to have anything you wanted would take the fun out of it and make you value what you do acquire less (basically the same paradigm that since the internet came along has made music less fun for youngsters imo)

Im sure I would GAS out on vintage gear and then sell it on here for 50% of what I paid for it, just like now really :))

That's a relief. When I read the thread title first off, I thought it was an advert by JB offering sex for cash to buy new gear.

  • Nah...I'm so far from being that rich it's ridiculous (the pooches haven't helped with this in the last 12 months).

However, I now have the best 3 guitars I can imagine and the one amp in the world that's completely perfect for my needs. It's basically cured my GAS.

I never been rich - but I've managed to find the money to buy most of the guitars I've really wanted.

I recently watched Mark Knopfler Guitar Stories, which sees him revisiting old haunts, including a pub in Leeds where Steve Philips was playing.

MK sat in with the band - playing his '58 Les Paul....

Just because you have the money doesn't mean that you spend it. Like a number of people here I have a decent income, and could find the money to buy any one of the guitars in the forum classifieds. (Not all, but any one of them).  There are two reasons why I don't. First, a fear of cluttering my life with things which I don't use.  Secondly I believe that it takes time to know an instrument, and get the best out of it. So I guess I'm saying that there's a point where time and attention become more important than money.

Value for money must still come into it!

I've played some lovely instruments and the best built of the bunch was my old Zon Hyperbass. They retail at about £5500 depending on exchange rate.

But - a Fodera could be 3 times that money and I know it won't be 3 times the quality - diminishing returns (and the fact that Fodera are still in a monstrously expensive New York location and have to pay the rent - that must put the price up loads).

If the GAS fairy arrived then I would be looking at one of these...

Classical carbon instruments have taken a bit of flack - but the makers did a proper blind test on their cellos and violins and the invited conductors picked the carbon ones as their favourite - much too their own annoyance!! :D

Still - that bass would be $12,500 + vat + import.

Expensive - but at the same time far far cheaper than a hand carved wooden instrument that would reach £50,000 without trying.

I know someone who owns two Stradavarius violins. He plays one and lends another to a concert violinist. He's no less likely to loose money than in shares.

I think GAS affects people regardless of personal wealth and not just with guitars. There are plenty of people for whom it's not the use of the object that matters but the splurging and acquiring.

FWIW I was once in Vintage and Rare browsing. There was only one other bloke there, who I paid no attention to until the assistant said to him "Do you want to try anything Noel?".

"Nah just looking," said the customer, at which point I glanced over and saw that it was indeed Mr Gallagher.

Think he's far less likely to lose money IMHO.

I've got to the point in my life where I have most of the guitars I want *, certainly more than I need, but the GAS is still there ! ;) My main concern now is how GAS can override playing, plus I don't want a mahoosive collector's collection, I'm happy with a player's collection.  (Well I'd like to be ;) )

    * Within reason, vintage stuff is still out of the question financially, and other than an original D'Aquisto, it doesn't really float my boat

EDIT: Sorry if this sounds smug, was just meant to be honest.

Just thought a bit more - guilt at GAS is in direct proportion to reduction in gigs. If I'm gigging GAS doesn't really raise its head.

    I wish!

There is a list of things I would seek to buy (or commission for one-off build), if given unlimited access to funds. Whether the GAS would continue once that list had been completed is another question. Maybe it wouldn't, because while once upon a time all I "needed" was a Les Paul, all I "needed" then came to include an SG, then a Strat, then a 335, and now includes a 175 and a 330, and various other  hollow or semiacoustic offerings from other makers. I suspect that as items on the list were purchased. other items would find their way onto the list. That would seem to be the nature of GAS.

EDIT makes more sense with the strikeout

Is GAS indirectly proportional to income?

    lol. God no.

When I was skint I wanted a Rickenbacker or a Jazzmaster or a Gretsch or a Casino. Now I have more spare cash I want all of them...

Noel Gallagher may have enough money to buy what ever he wants.

But he has Liam as a brother.

    Think I'd rather stay broke!
