Amps for electric Violins?

What's Hot
fretmeisterfretmeister Frets: 24845
Any ideas?

The daughter of a friend has just got an electric violin and needs an amplifier.

My first thought was a keyboard or bass amp - but what say you fine people?

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

I would have thought the Marshall AS50 would be up for this....supports a wide range of acoustic instruments plus a mic input too
If you are local to RM5 you are welcome to try mine

    Cheers

Does the violin have an active pickup? If so it could probably run into most amplified cabs/wedges?

If not you might be looking at a rather specialized "front end".

One thing, she won't need a massive LF capability!

  • I knew an electric violinist (some years ago now) who endorsed Trace Acoustic and used one of their smaller acoustic guitar combos. She played in a roots/world/rock band who weren't shrinking violets when it came to volume and it seemed to work pretty well. Kept up with the drums, bass, guitar and accordian with volume to spare for the solos..

  • It depends I suppose if she is after an acoustic sound as possible or a more electric sound. I remember seeing the Blackstar HT's demoed with an electric violin and that was very fine. I generally don't like the Blackstar HT sound for guitar,I think it actually worked better on violin.

There's two blokes I've seen busking in Kingston Upon Thames who play the violin.

One goes through what looks like an old Vox Escort amp.

The other goes through a Roland Microcube.

Both sound absolutely fine, but I think for flexibility and sheer VFM the MC would be worth checking out.

I'd look at an old Trace Acoustic. They're cheap on the used market and sound pretty good (they were pretty expensive in their day).

If you were going to spend a lot it's hard to beat aer. They're expensive though.

The other option is a decent DI and use the pa system

Is this for indoor or gig? Roland is the best bet. Roland MOBILE AC for home practice but if gigs are important try a Roland AC 40. Great amps for acoustic instruments.

  • AER would be good, but a bit expensive. Worth visiting someone with a Marshall AS50D or borrowing one to try it out.
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

Ditto on the AER, our Django violinist uses one (used to use a Roland 30w monitor), and so does Elana James of The Hot Club of Cowtown.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Without any self interest whatsoever ;) I have a Trace Acoustic TA50R for sale if you want to talk about it.  It is compact and sounds superb, my partner has used it for her Yamaha electric violin and the tone shaping options work really well.

She's 10 years old. I think an AER is somewhat out of reach at the moment!

  • Am I the only one who is currently wondering what a violin would sound like through a dual rec?

Can I be forgiven for suggesting an ID Core?

She can connect her phone and computer for jamalongs and practice.

It's a bit like the Yammie silent ones. So it's a fair bit quieter and she can practice with headphones as well.

^^ Speaking as someone who's 8 year old daughter is currently learning violin on an acoustic I wholeheartedly agree!
