The Matrix trilogy. The first one had so much promise then it all went terribly wrong. I'd have the Keanu role played by a person who doesn't look utterly ridiculous trying to do kung fu too.
he had a broken neck whilst filming it, hence the weird fu

you're right though - the last 2 were not good enough

World War Z, but making have more semblance to the book (i.e. any fucking semblance whatsoever).
Im pretty sure that the least resemblance to the book award goes to iRobot.
i'd say it'd be ANY of the James Bond movies

The first four are fairly close, at least in general plot. It was You Only Live Twice that started the practice of just using the title and the main character names.

A teenage Marty McFly goes back thirty years to ... 1985.

Back to the Future ... I love the film and would love to see what someone else could do with it.

I dread to think what he'd play at the under the sea dance though :(

I thought Casino Royale (Daniel Craig not David Niven) was surprisingly close.  I haven't read many of the books though, to be honest.

How about Inception, but include a map on the screen so you know which dream of a dream of a dream they're currently in.
Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman.
My boss told me "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"... now I'm sat in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman.

Or Donnie Darko with a plot that is actually fathomable and that really makes sense.

Same film then… assuming a temporal shift makes sense at all :).

You could watch the director's cut with extra explanatory waffle.

Is that a bit like the studio cut/director's cut versions of Blade Runner, but the wrong way round?

Call me weird, but I didn't think anything needed extra explanation in Donnie Darko. That said I have seen it more than once… it's a brilliant film. But I understood it the first time.

Yeah, it's a bit like the alternate cuts of Blade Runner, although it's so long since I watched any of them (DD or BR!) I can't really remember the differences.

I think I mostly understood Donnie Darko on first viewing.  Well enough to enjoy it, anyway.  I'm not someone who needs every T crossed and every I dotted so long as a film feels right.

  • Ref the James Bond Films, some could well do with updating such as Dr No and Fireball.
From Russia with love was pretty good, probably one of the best along with Goldfinger.
Forget Roger Moore though, replace the lot with decent plots and actors.
