Always knew some people took Crufts to seriously, sabotaging rivals etc. but if this is true then this is about as low as you can get.

    Lower than a snake's belly.

Showing dogs is just about the most retarded past time I can think of.

The poor little bastard is probably better off now rather than being shipped around the world in crate and having to stand around being critiqued every weekend.

Dog shows seem to have a lot of things like this happen. There was an incident a while ago where an Akita (who had just become one of the champions) and another dog had a bit of a pop at each other, and a competing owner put herself between them - then told the police that the Akita had attacked her, completely unprovoked, and pushed for it to be put down.

It really is horrible the lengths some of these people will go to. It's unfathomable that they could possibly love their animals, when they'd do this to others just to get ahead.

To be fair, the shows do have their good points - keeping an eye on breeding standards and encouraging responsible breeding (for the most part).

And to be equally fair some of the so called standards replicate inherent health problems which is pretty disgusting...

I think, if an Akita had attacked a human, they'd be no human left to examine for evidence :D

Yes, this is true - generally, the Kennel Club try to keep the breeds healthy and pure at the same time, whereas a lot of show breeders act like min/maxers in role playing games; they'll read the rules and try to accentuate specific points they think the judges will be looking for, hence the problems. Either that, or they'll overbreed from the same stock, thus causing much of the inbreeding. Some of them even talk about "yield" - how many puppies survived without health problems - with the implied "acceptable loss", which a bloody horrific thing to do.

All for the sake of money; breeding from a champion line can fetch a fortune.

I think, if an Akita had attacked a human, they'd be no human left to examine for evidence :D
Yes. They were, after all, bred to hunt elk and bears...solo. Humans as targets are basically a bit of light exercise in that context.

A friend of mine had her dog attacked by a pair of badly-socialised Akitas; they dragged their owner on her belly across 100m of park to attack. The owner says she was caught off-guard, because she was on the phone at the time.

I can't even begin to understand how you'd properly walk a single Akita while talking on the phone, much less two. You have to be completely aware of your surroundings as well as being fully-attentive to your dog, because the simple fact is that one Akita is both stronger and faster than one human...and, no matter how well-trained they are, you can never trust a dog to think like a human.

Crufts is all about the owners' egos rather than the dogs. The kennel club and standards for pedigrees have reduced the quality of life of so many breeds.

Never understood the thinking behind dog shows - some committee arbitrarily decides what their platonic ideal of, say, a St Bernard should be. Then breeders come up with something that is almost, but not quite, unlike a real dog, then drive it up to the NEC so the poor thing can be felt up by the judges. Real animal lovers shouldn't have any truck with this kind of nonsense.

I'm not sure that they understand the criticism....I'm thinking about a load of ex show dogs with low self esteems and eating disorders.

Whoever's done the poisoning is a scumbag though. Jesus.

I like the bit where the dogs get to run their fat owners on a lead around the ring.

I'd quite like to be an MP, so I could sponsor a load of North Korean asylum seekers into coming over here and setting up a mobile takeaway stand.  I'd use my networks to get them the only food pitch at Crufts selling Alsatian Dakjuk and Crispy fried Springer Spaniel, see how it would go down with the regulars.  Then I'd call a terror alert and lock them in for a week until they were salivating with hunger and take pictures.

Ugh I hate dog shows - the ridiculous hair, the unnatural gaits, the jowls, spittle, the prancing, the horrific consequences of inbreeding, that stupid vacant expression they have searching for praise, the ridiculous double-barrelled names...

Dunno how the dogs put up with them.

Yeah, The Sun used that as a tagline.  I'm glad we live in enlightened age where cruelty to animals is hilarious.

Sorry Handsome_Chris. Looking back, it probably wasn't appropriate for me to make a cheap joke in what is a thread about animal cruelty. I certainly don't see anything funny about animal cruelty and can only apologise for any offence caused.

(Also, if you look back at the tenth post in this thread you will see that my views on dog shows are not especially positive, particularly as regards breeding in what someone has arbitrarily decided are the expected traits for that breed. Stevebrum probably made my point better...
