1x12 valve combo

I use a Harley-Benton GA5 combo for band practice and small gigs. My other combos are 2x12 (AC30, Bluesbreaker). While I am happy to use either of those for gigging, Mr Bandleader thinks I "need" a 1x12 because he thinks we will always be gigging in places where space is tight enough to require me to sit my guitar combo on top of the bass player's combo (which is a home made cabinet containing a solid state bass amp and a single 12" speaker). The GA5 is fine being so placed, but the others would not. Mr Bandleader uses Peavey 1x12 combos (he's got a 20W and a 30W). I don't think I can afford to buy another 1x12 combo, and will tell Mr Bandleader that he'll have to get us lots of really lucrative gigs if he expects me to buy one, but I've started to get curious about what might be out there and recommended. I don't need FX other than perhaps reverb but that's not essential, all I need is a decent clean tone that'll break up a bit when I lean on my guitar's vol pot, and break up a bit more when I step on the HT-Boost. 1 channel is sufficient.

    What budget are you talking?
If money no object Two Rock all the way (my main gigging amp and tiny)
If money an object the ubiquitous Fender blues junior or the more rare Ampeg Jet 20 are all good amps in that range

Also - you bastard, I'd totally forgotten my GAS for a J20 and now I'm thinking one would look awesome with my new Micro SVT stack :/

The Fender Vaporisers are being sold off; they are 2x10 and maybe in the marmite category but a lot smaller than an AC30, valve with reverb. The Peavey valve king 20's were being sold off cheap after the collapse of Peavey UK ( Europe?) and there are new heads out there under £200 and the odd combo not much more. These were £500 plus originally I think.

  • a 212 doesnt really take up much more floorspace than a 112 imo

true, some 1x12 combos take up almost as much space as a 2x12. Mr Bandleader's Peavey Classic looks about half the width of a Bluesbreaker, and unlike a Bluesbreaker, could be perched on top of Mr Bass Player's bass combo.

I also wondered about a 20W Lionheart head on top of an upright 2x12, which would perch as required. I've got a 2x12. Can't afford the head though :(

I think the trusty Blues Junior is kind of the working man's default here. There is also the H&K Tubemeister 18 Twelve, it's more expensive and has a more 'European' sound but it isn't a bad little amp. I would simply go for the Blues Junior. Really.

I'm very interested in this thread as a nice little bedroom valve amp is right up on my shopping list at the moment.

The blues juniors - so are these good amps?

Laney Cubs - what sort of tones are these aimed at?

I mostly use mine at home, with a pedal for drive. It's got a more mid-focused sound than your traditional blackface fender, and works very well indeed with pedals. Reverb's not as deep or warm sounding as the bigger fender valve amps, but it's fine in modest amounts for adding a bit of gloss. The amp's own preamp drive is fine, but difficult to dial in at lower volumes as the master volume gets louder much more quickly with the gain up - easier to use a pedal.
