  • I bought my first one cause it was cheaper to buy and mend than the Citroen I did have....

As Sporky mentioned the Skoda Superb is an awesome car and if you don't care about the fact that people sneer at them Lexus make brilliantly engineered cars.
The Superb is just too big.  Or, more accurately, too massive.  So it's out.

Lexus tick the quality / reliability box, but there's no diesel option and I couldn't afford the Hybrid option, so that's out as well.

I think I'm going to have to make a viewing appointment at the local Merc dealership for the weekend.  See how keen they are to do a deal.  I haven't spent my birthday money yet, so there's a chance ...

Well the new model C class is expected next year and could be announced as early as January so I daresay there should be discounts to be had (or try a car broker eg drive the deal etc)

Seems to be quite a few good leasing deals for them lately too.

Discounts is what I'm expecting.  They have a pre-reg on the stock list.  Already 6mths old.  It's around £8k off list at the moment, which isn't enough given its imminent "obsolescence".

Lease deals are OK at 10k miles pa.  But I'd be looking for 15k-20k pa, and the prices go up a lot when the miles go up.

    Is that a recent thing?
I'm looking at SH cars ATM and I've seen a few diesel Lexi

Think so.  Think they're concentrating on hybrid now, in preference to diesel.

Are you lot proper musos or posh, middle-class substitutes? I thought everyone ran around in beaten up band vans!

Not owning a van means I don't have to cart other people's gear about.
My car(s) fit exactly the amount of gear I need to transport and nothing else.

No, I cannot pick you up, either.
    :)

They didn't do diesel for very long as I recall, and it was the crap Toyota diesel. Popular with airport minicab drivers and that's about it.

I don't often get dressed in pub toilets, so I'm probably the latter. :)

Having spent a few hours in the Mercedes shop this afternoon, I can report that:

C250CDi BE AMG Sport.  Nice.  Easy to drive, comfortable, quite nippy.

E220CDi BE Sport Coupe.  Nicer.  Not quite as nippy, but more spacious, more toys, and I liked the pillarless doors.

I have left them to consider my offer.

And today, I shook the man's hand.

This time next week, I won't be a millionaire (Rodney), but I will be a Mercedes-er.

Naturally, I didn't end up buying what I went in to buy, because there was something shinier (in this case, more vroomier) that seduced me.

    :D

Not quite that much vroomier.  I'll still be able to afford to run it!

Love Mercs, but wish you could still buy the models they made in the late 30's.
