"Waiting for blahblah.com" and slow page loading.

Emp_FabEmp_Fab Frets: 24675
Lately, I've noticed lots of websites take ages to fully load, with multiple messages in the bottom left status bar thingy (using Chrome) saying "waiting for facebook.com / twitter.com / whatever" - always sites that are not the one I'm waiting to view.

It's getting ridiculous now - pages are taking too long to load.

Is there anything I can do about it ?  I tried adding the likes of facebook.com etc to a hosts file pointing at 127.0.0.1, but that made no real difference.

Tried clearing temporary internet files? Re-install of windows? That sort of thing?

Before re-installing windows I'd clear internet files, check the computer is otherwise running fine and do a reboot (and possibly turn off for a few minutes to let it cool down) of the router. If those don't work, uninstall chrome and do a clean re-install of that.

Then if all that doesn't speed things up noticeably back everything up and do a completely clean install of the OS and software - total formatting of main drive and all.

Somewhere in there should be an online speed test (Speedtest.net) before and after.
    Also before and after
press Start+R to open the run menu.
Type cmd [enter] - This will open a command prompt
Type ping <web address> (without the <>s) eg "ping www.thefretboard.co.uk"
Type tracert <web address> (without the <>s) eg "tracert www.thefretboard.co.uk"

The second of those will show if your ISP is routing things badly - if it is then *maybe* a phonecall could improve things

Thanks for the suggestions Myranda, but... I won't be reinstalling - it's not the OS or the routing table.  It's the browser waiting for replies from all the linked sites.  If I could get Chrome to stop doing that, I'd be sorted.

More than likely, although it is a recent development. I'm probably being monitored. :)

Oh, so do I.  However, it's my work laptop with Win7/64 that I don't have any disc for and I can't join it to the work domain as I don't have the required account permissions.

if its a corporate laptop and being "properly managed"  Id wager its more likely additional security policies being applied by your company - in AV / intrusion detection/protection etc etc   -  Id still recommend a clean up tho

It won't be 'properly managed'.  'Poorly managed' more like.... possibly even 'Completely unmanaged' :-)

That's a thought.... I'll try it in safe mode.

i use ghostery to block a lot of that extra linking crap, but you have to balance a little bit of ghostery processing time with the time savings on blocking the links.
also may have to white list certain items (simple enough to do) so it doesnt break pages

other than that maybe contact your isp in case its something to do with the dns servers type thing

It might be crappy DNS. Try changing it to 8.8.8.8 which is Googles DNS and see if that helps.
