I don't understand: from the pics and description - has the finish on the back of the headstock been removed? 

Not trying to be a dick but you might want to consider a neck heel shot to further tempt potential buyers, as meltedbuzzbox mentioned.

No the finish on the rear of the neck and headstock is original. There are some heel shots on the photo bucket link. if you need any more info let me know mate

There isn't!

I mean the bit that should have the original date stamped/written on it, just below the truss rod screw.

It's stamped September 62 "B" for the neck profile I believe
