Relic'ed LP Jr maker (Poss EU)?

What's Hot

So,

I can't remember if it was at the 'old place' or indeed if it was over at the 'American Forum' where everyone has 200 PRS private stock guitars but I have a vague recollection of a link to a makers website where the had some really nice relic'ed LP & SG Jr's (A Pelham Blue one sticks in my mind for some reason). If it helps I think the DC replica had some reference to Johnny Thunders in the name and as i recall they also had a Strat replica called a 'Blackmore'.

Not sure but I think they were a European outfit.

Ringing any bells for anyone ?

JXG Guitars, Newcastle. Google it. He's just made me a killer 58 DC replica.

  • The headstocks appear to be a funny shape, and don't say Gibson on them...

One question on these: once you're up to about $2500, isn't it worth looking for an original '50s basket-case LP Jr? Restore/improve for maximum playability/tone but don't restore the naturally relicked bits to keep the cosmetic appeal of a beaten-up guitar.

Prices have softened a LOT on these since the financial climate changed.

Ooh really ? I'd assumed that DC Jr's were 4k plus (He says like he's got 2k in his back pocket !) so where would you go looking for such a beast ?

There's a distinct difference being on this side of the Pond. Often see Jnrs on les paul forums going for $3-4k, but they've got the supply. We don't. Find me a genuine 1958/9 LP DC TV Jnr, in the UK, for £2k.

Easy enough to go down the route if shipping one in but you'd be obv adding costs. If I recall there'd be minimal duty to pay if its a genuine vintage unstrument.

Or you could go to some one like Eternal Guitars in the UK and have one made.

If your into a bit of Jazz/Fusion have a look at a video of Jess Lewis playing "Get it Like That" (she was only 16 when the video was made) on the link below.

Well, I'm suggesting a basket case LP Jr, meaning one with (say) a broken/repaired neck, refin, etc. They come up every now and then in the USA, are considerably cheaper and merit revamping, IMHO. Even a genuine '50s carcass is worth the effort.

Mine, a '59 DC Jr, was was $1920 shipped, and not such a basket case - it had simply had the P90 hole hacked out for a humbucker, (since returned to a god-ear P90 repositioned so it just about covers the humbucker hole). And I bought it when back when the market was a lot more bouyant.

  • Like @GSPBASSES it was Eternal who came to mind.
