Ponderings: What am I missing?

What's Hot

I'm (bored) getting near the end of my degree and a grad job is lined up so I have a bit of pent-up GAS planned for next year onwards. The plan is to get a Pedaltrain and fill it to the brim with some top-noth pedals. They'll likely be complimenting a Mesa Express, or maybe a Fuchs Lucky 7 depending on what I end up going for - but essentially I normally use a pushed clean tone most of the time, and then pedals to kick it past that.

Here's what I've got already;

Fulldrive II non-mosfet (the core part of my tone, it's rarely off, and never out of comp-cut mode)
ProCo RAT2 (early one, rarely used except for fun)
TC Alter Ego (Until buying this pedal I never really had a use for delay. I'm now using it a lot)

I've got another couple of source audio pedals that I doubt I'll be keeping, and I've had plenty of pedals in the past. All I've managed to work out so far is that I need a polytune, a fuzz (face), and a power supply. Apart from that, I'm a bit stumped - except that I don't use modulation to any great degree and could go without.

Suggestions please!

  • Everyone needs a Wah (I'd recommend the MC404 Dunlop/CAE)

  • I've had a few, but don't really feel the need for them in my (amateur) noodlings too much to be honest! My favourite was an old WH-10, I haven't tried the reissue though, or the MC404 for that matter. :)

If you don't use modulation and aren't sure what to buy why not save the money and put it towards a second amp at a later date? You might get more satisfying results having two differently voiced amps rather than one amp and lots of pedals you're not sure you need.

Or buy a big muff to go with that fuzz face, having both is fun :)

  • I'd suggest a tremolo, one that can do both square and triangle waves.

  • @guitarfishbay - you're probably not wrong there! I'm expecting to build a tweed deluxe at some point so there's that. I'm not sure on Big Muff's though, I've had a couple of (Little) Big Muffs and didn't find them to be anything like what I'm after though. I might try one of the poodle kits though with some mods at some point?

Tremolo is a fair suggestion, I'd forgotten about it! Reminds me about the Flint that's been doing the rounds lately, that took my fancy somewhat. B-)

  • I reckon you'd like an old-style muff. Rams head or Triangle type spec with a mid-hump switch. Still not touch sensitive but a much more useful sound than the modern flat sounding ones from EHX.

Other than that I'd also go for Trem. I'm building a Schallers Trem clone this week so I'll let you know how that goes!

  • I had another look through Poodle's kits last night. The Ross comp looks good, and I figure I may as well try out a Klone from there at some point too and see what the fuss is about. :)

Just be aware that those Poodle kits are mega addictive. I started with a little SHO for the pedalboard and now I have 6 of the buggers and 2 more waiting to build..!

I know you said you don't use modulation, but check out a nice, simple phaser - something like the Mooer Ninety Orange. I only use mine in one song regularly, but occasionally when I feel the need elsewhere. It's a crackin' effect to have kicking around for those "oooo, I know..." moments.

I don't have a lot on my board either, though: wah (Weeping Demon), channel switch, phaser, Boo Boost, Flashback. No need for anything more.

EDIT: Personally, I preferred the Hardwire HT-6 to the Polytune in terms of usability. The only issue is that, by comparison to my Polytune Mini, it's huge.

nestled among me peterson strobostomp, analogman bi-comp and fulltone cf-1 is an orange box phaser - a great bit of kit :)
A sig-nat-eur? What am I meant to use this for ffs?! Is this thing recording?

Nope. I've had a few, (and one of the source audio ones I have atm is a phaser too) but the closest I'll get now is a univibe with some proper throb & grit to it. I like the sound of phasers, but they don't inspire my playing at all!

    Synthy-octavy?  Or good ol'weirdness...or perhaps a looper?

Earthquaker Devices do a good range of weird, personally I'd love a Rainbow Machine, an acquired taste though.

+1 Earthquaker Devices...i have Ghost Echo and Hummingbird which never leave my board...

Comps: I have tried a lot, but always go back to my MXR Custom Comp.
Tuner: The Hardwire one i thought was better than polytune, but its massive compared to the mini poly
Wah: The CAE wah is amazing, up there with the Fulltone wah's

For something completely different, what about something like the EQD Bit Commander? could be fun...

I do keep toying with picking up another Liquid Sunshine, I shouldn't have sold my last one but I'm now concerned that it would displace my Fulldrive and I love that too much lol! I'm sure I'll get another at some point anyway, my wife knows I miss it so maybe I'll get a surprise prezzie one day. :)

Octave/octavia's are a good idea - I'm quite keen on Josh Homme's tones in particular, and did have a Fulltone Ultimate Octave at one point which sounded incredible. Again, I'm not sure why I sold that!?! :\

I'll check out the Xotic SP Comp - I like the sound of their EP booster too but I'm not convinced my these micro pedals from a practicality point-of-view? *edit* Aha, Grissom's a user... good enough for me then!

Cheers all btw, you're coming up with some nice ideas B-)

If you want one of those I'm just mentioning that I've done a big ol' price drop on a Foxx Tone Machine clone -- which is an octave fuzz.  Think "Purple Haze" and you're in the right territory with the octave kicked in.

I don't have a problem using them, but the SP is a very set and forget type of pedal and avoids the Mooer teeny knobs.

some subtle OD, like a Klone or honey bee

An EQ set to scoop or boost mids (or one of each)

    a compressor

  • Duncan lava box. You'll have a right laugh with it.

Oh, an envelope filter. I have an ehx qtron and I won't let it go because it's porn music in a box. Crucial for every gigging scenario, regardless of genre.
