Has to be period correct hole mint green or parchment for an early '60's and usually do the little truss rod access bit with a round file if not a Fender one or a single ply correct hole for a '50's. I'm conservative.
Tortoiseshell and white pearl are for people who like orange and pink mole skin loon trousers with a purple stripe.
Look up a few RI's on the internet, that is the period correct mounting hole numbers, location and spacings.
50's were single ply and 8 hole
60's 11 hole, but note the position of the screws on top of the pickguard between the pickups as they were different to modern 11 hole. I don't think mint green ever existed, more that it was an aged bleeding of the black underneath coming through which is replicated with modern mint green.
They were all the same size template as far as I'm aware.
If you are set on a '62 one, you don't have to splash out for a genuine Fender, as so long as your hole match you can do the roundfile thing. In fact I don't even know that they had that when they were sold new.
I think 70's onwards is the normal, standard, 11 mounting hole pattern we see today, with the closer hole on the top left of the pickguard.
In all honesty it doesn't really matter as the holes are covered anyway, Malmsteen's '60's ones and many others have modern spaced holes and replacement scratchplates.
Modern
62
'50's
so the main difference between the modern and vintage 11 hole is the screw placement above the middle pickup?
I guess the better design is the vintage (62) then, more equidistant and countersunk screw holes.
the horns and tail on all 3 seem the same then. interesting.
