Interesting, this suggests the loop on the v40 is unbuffered.

One day, an amp maker will just do the effects loop right...

Nope, the loop is perfect. it's the TC pedals that are the problem.
But if a buffer fixes it, surely it implies the loop is unbuffered?

As soon as a pedal is engaged it will buffer the signal anyway. Unless the signal level is too high for the tc pedals and that's causing the issue?

In which case, it's a shame you can't switch the effects loop level to instrument.

Sheee-ite, so are there still problems running it with TC pedals?

I think I want one of these - can anyone tell me whether it's really what I need?

Stepping back  - I'm looking for a small head and a 1x12 cab, to use as a pedal platform.

Budget up to around £1,000 (total for head + cab).  Willing to buy second hand.

    Must-haves
    • Loud enough for rehearsals and small pub gigs with a drummer
    • Can achieve both edge-of-breakup and fully clean at those volumes
    • Portability - one of my motivations is that I'm sick of lugging my 2x12 combo.  For rehearsals, ideally I'd just take the head plus my load box, which has a speaker-emulated XLR out to the PA.
    Don't need
    • Bedroom volume - it's very rarely going to get used at home
    • Channel switching
Sounds-wise, my current band plays various stuff from art-rock (Television, Talking Heads) via Americana (R.E.M.) to 90s rock (Stone Roses, Wonder Stuff).

Is the V40 going to be the amp of my dreams?

Having tried a V40 next to the Puretone I used to have I found the V40 quite bland compared to the Puretone so that would be my pick (though you have to give it a reasonable amount of welly to get it to break up).

    "it" being the Puretone, correct?

I get sparkly cleans out of the Victory V30 and dirty bad boy gain out of ch 2 - running it with an FX8 so I use a 10 band EQ and the EP Booster style SDD Pre-Amp as an always on. Best of both worlds - can also boost the clean channel with a Riot style distortion or a low-mid gain TS style pedal to give you variations
I know of a few V40s in Edinburgh so hoping to get out and see one live!

I have had a V40 for a year no and after a period of not being convinced I love it now. You have to get the master volume up and get the speaker moving to hear it's true voice. It does sound clean or edge of breakup and has a nice thick creamy mid range. Works great with boosts and overdrives.

Listen to Ariel Posen in this video that's the sound sound a V40 right there, these are sounds I get. Check out that Strat to hear that mid range in action:

  • @djspecialist I think from your wish list, the v40 will work well for you. I had one for a year and it was great but just a little bland. I was brought up on Marshalls and have gone back to that as I couldn't get the kind of edge of break up compression that I like out of the v 40. For my ears it was a little harsh/brittle. But as a pedal platform for lots of different genres it's great - lightweight, portable and reliable. I think it was designed as a pedal platform really.

I've owned my V40 head for a year now and still chuffed with it.  Not looked at other amps since owning it.

Currently running it through an oversized (Fat Baby) Zilla 1 x  12 with a Celestion G12-65 speaker.   I run a small board on a PedalTrain nano plus.  I can carry everything in a one-er.  Although I wise my cab was little smaller/lighter.

It's super light and portable and the support from Victory is superb (I mean spot on).  I had a problem with a it last week which turned out to be a pre-amp tube.  Victory sent me a JJ tube through the post to try as I didn't have any spares.

I'd totally agree it's a pedal platform.  My pedal board consists of:

    TC mini tuner
    EP Booster
    Wampler Dual Fusion
    Wampler tumnus
    Wampler Ego Mini
    Deep Blue Delay

I can cover a lot of ground with this small board.  And with the compressor after the overdrives I can get some crunchy rhythm tones out of it at any volume.

I have used it at home, rehearsals and live, bloody love it.    Love the fact you can alter the dynamics with the different wattage options.

The single ended mode is really useful at home.  But since getting the compressor (set subtle with a low blend) I'm using single mode ended less.

Checkout the "that Pedal Show" vids for some really great examples of it.  It's just a matter of finding the right overdrive combo.

Do you run your Deep Blue Delay in the loop or into the front?

In the front mate. If you're running the amp clean it's fine to do that.

it's a total blank canvas of an amp that takes pedals really well. The hard part for me was finding the right pedals.   But that was my lack of experience picking the right pedals.

  • I just bought a V40 - should arrive later this week :)

Now the dilemma is what cab to get.  I played a friend's Zilla 2x12 at a gig last weekend, which sounded great.  I think however a 1x12 would do me - as long as it had decent bass response (so presumably oversized is the way to go).

I mailed Paul at Zilla, who recommended a Fat Baby (like the one @AndyJP has).  It's almost as large as a 2x12 but presumably a lot lighter, so I'll probably go that way - unless anyone here has other suggestions...

I've not tried it with another can but have the matching Victory 1x12 which sounds good. It's quite a warm sounding amp and there is a fair bit of bass so you need to me mindful of pushing the cab back against a wall as that will emphasise the low end a bit too much.

I definitely find the V40 sounds better with the master volume opened up over 5 and a good drive pedal.

Thanks - it's good to know that you like the 1x12.

I have a few good drive pedals - choosing the V40 was based on its good reputation as a pedal platform. Which power output do you typically run with? I'm guessing 5 on the master in high power mode is pretty loud...

Yes it is pretty loud. I use the low power mode quite often, which I think is 9 watts  but even that is loud. I don't use the single ended mode. It's interesting that with the pre-amp dialed at around 2 for a very clean tone and the master up over 5, switching between low power and high power doesn,t add much volume just adds a bit of bass and body.

I can just about get away with a loudish clean tone on low power mode in the house and use a pedal for drive keeping the pedals volume in check. Using the amps own drive and a J Rockett Archer wound up to to push it even harder into saturation isn't very family friendly at all but that is the best sound for me!

It was this video that sold me on the V40 and Archer combination, the SG Jr tone is right up my street:

The Fat Baby combined with the V40 has plenty of bottom end.  But guess it depends on what style of music.
I'm not playing chunky rhythm stuff through it, I'm mostly playing single note lines.  For me it's plenty and very happy with it.

Be warned though, the Zilla Fat Baby is as heavy as some 2x12s.  It's fatter depth wise than a mates 2x12 Egnater cab and the same weight.   With the speaker it must be around 20kg.

My combo is over 30kg, so that will still be something of a relief :)

It does make me wonder though whether I should look at a 2x12 cab instead - particularly as I already have two speakers I'd be happy to load it with.

Would guess my 1x12 is prob
same weight as a victory 2x12.  But it's not as wide as a 2x12 so easier to shift.

I quite like the 1x12 tbh.  It's easy to mic also.
