People who are Holocaust deniers and prescribe to other conspiracy theories are absolute idiots.  I met a chap recently, educated to a PHD who was of the belief the USA government is entirely responsible for the Syrian crisis, it was a tricky conversation to avoid getting too irate...

It's often a bit more sinister than that.  Cutesy meme, cat picture, or obviously bullshit story about pensioner/war veteran/dog being abused gets a metric shitload of drive-by likes and shares from the hard-of-thinking.  The page then is sold (often to a company who broker these things) with the price determined by the number of hits.  All of a sudden you might find that thing you clicked without thinking is promoting something altogether different, and possibly unsavoury, with a load of ready-made hits/clicks/likes.

Simple in its genius, really.  That's why the stories are usually designed to either tug at heartstrings or cause outrage a la Daily Mail.
