"High-intensity beacon (or bacon) might help aliens find Earth"

This sounds just a wee bit stupid to me...

I think Hawkin's view that it might not be the safest thing to broadcast out position out into the Universe has merit. I don't fancy being the main-course on an alien's new diet.

We're probably very toxic to them.

I'm pretty sure that aliens with the capability of light speed travel could find us in a jot if they wanted to ..

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

...which suggests that either there isn't a trick that lets you do light-speed travel (or FTL) or that there aren't many aliens out there, and if there are, they're pretty introverted.

"Hey, Qgl'rtx, d'you want to pop over to Earth, see what they're up to?"

"Not likely. It's all small-talk and those stupid little shop-bought quiches. Let's stay in and watch Zvtgnk's Kglatkzh again instead."

I first read that as 'High-intensity bacon' though it'd probably have the same effect.Everyone, even ET I imagine, loves a nice bacon sarnie.

I don't think it's the best idea to broadcast where our one and only planet is.

Our planet is a very small dot on a very, very large and changing dotty page.

I'm not surprised they haven't found us.

  • What if it's a front and they found us ages ago, and this is just a way of revealing it publicly,
5 years after we start the beacon running, we received a message from "aliens" they're on their way, lets have a  referendum to see if we should join the galactic senate or if we should be slaves to our new reptilian overlords!

Nah, they'll just end up befriending @Sambostar, then he'll get them pissed on Stella, then try and sleep with them, then they'll bugger off. It will be fine.

Well, the likelihood is that we're just not that interesting to them. They couldn't learn anything of value from us (any more than we could learn anything of value from a tribe in the Amazon), we've already used up a vast portion of our natural resources, and overall the cost (in time and resources) of getting here would most likely be prohibitive.

There's not even any point in them coming here to settle - much easier to find a planet capable of supporting life but without any intelligent species which would need displacing.

Agreed.... but we might be very tasty.

Unlikely...humans are mostly fat and gristle. Give it 50 years, and there'll be less gristle.

Well, they couldn't put it anywhere in the EU as you'd only be allowed a 60 watt bulb.
