    Haitian Research?

    or Voodoo Science

I remember speaking to a very senior HR guy in the late 90s who gave me a short overview of some of his methods and goals - it left me aghast. A lot of the reasoning was based on a self-serving logic which helped justify the ends without a thought to the means and, often, those ends weren't even for the benefit of the company.

The whole HR industry seems to have pulled itself up by the bootstraps - an essential in a business of any real size, but unwieldy as soon as it reaches that size. It was nice to see a comment about a good HR department but I think I would bet that that was in a small business. If a company has, say, 30-100 employees then a good (small) HR department could be worth its weight in gold - a team that knows the business of the company rather than the received wisdom of the HR industry applied as a de facto standard.

Anyone else noticed that when there are rounds of redundancies, the HR department rarely loses anyone?

    That's when they're busiest, duh.
Edit: rephrased to say "that's when they actually do something", namely giving out the "at risk" stuff and meeting legal minimum standards, etc.

And conveniently, once the redundancy rounds are over they're no longer at risk.

Our HR are useless. My latest HR are useless story:

Big govt site with about 500 employees. There's this one very strange guy who's clothes are always in a state of extreme disrepair, and he rarely washes (I have no idea how he got a job here!). Anyway, he was coming down a stairwell one day, the flies on his trousers were completely broken and you could see his pants pretty much hanging out the front. The guy clearly needs help, I have spoken to Occ Health twice before about this but they never follow up. Anyway, I rang HR and said to a girl there that we can't have a staff member walking around like that and it needed sorting ASAP (lots of young female students on site for one thing). I told them his name. She gets back in touch - do I know who his line manager is? (No), do I know what dept he works for (no, isn't this stuff your bloody job??). Anyway, I actually tracked down his dept as she couldn't.

Roll on two weeks, and there he is again in EXACTLY the same state. I rang her up and said that nothing appears to have happened and she says "oh yes, I've been on leave. What dept does he work for again?"

I find it curious that when I remember them being called "Personell" they were the friendly bunch who used to help people who needed it.

Our lot aren't HR, they're Human Capital, presumably to really emphasise that the rest of us are just a commodity to be batted around by senior management. Er, yay?
