For example.

I want to search a thread i started a couple of years ago when I looked for advice about my patch bay in my board.

I am pretty sure it is in the FX section.

I am pretty sure I started the thread

I am pretty sure the word "patch" was used.

So using advance search, keyword "patch", FX section, member - RaymondLin

Sort by relevance....but the top results are stuff by other people?  /confused.

What am I doing wrong?

If you're sure it's your own thread I usually go to my profile and click on "discussions" as they're all listed

Found the thread this way, thanks.

Still, the search function is totally useless...

Bit of an exaggeration - I find it quite useful, but it's not perfect by any stretch. Our problem is that the search plugin is incredibly touchy - to the point of being terrifying to work with code-wise, and there aren't any viable alternatives that don't destroy the server in terms of resources.

I've found that the search function has its limitations.

Cant we just use Google, restricting the results to those found here?
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

There's a simpler way which allows both - just use Google like this:

    site:www.thefretboard.co.uk somethingIwanttosearchfor

While the search here has its limitations (mainly to do with username searches), it can be pretty useful.

Just tried that with a sample of stuff, and by golly it works a treat! :)

  • The search function appears to have the most benign and uninteresting posts of that search topic at the top of the search....and the more interesting posts lower down. Around the 500th post onwards.

  • When I do a search....the first 50 or so dross posts are mine!

Thats what I was thinking of.

Maybe we should replace our standard search box with a Google search, prepopulated with the site: bit.

I disagree, on the basis that our search can do things that Google can't - like narrowing it down to specific categories, or changing the results order. Using the advanced search, everything works pretty well as far as I can tell; the only problem that we have is that the username filter doesn't work particularly well.

Its not perfect, its rubbish. You really DO sound like a bad IT consultant from the nineties giving excuses for software that fails in its basic function.  Is it impossible to provide a simple word search box on the mobile site that will bring up results in the 'most recent first' order?

Do you really think that slagging off the admins busting their asses to make this place better will ingratiate you with us or make us more likely to listen to your complaints?

I clicked your link mate. It was great. Top 5 hyperlinks I've clicked today.

    Would click again. 5 stars.

I did. It contained exactly what I would have posted, so I left the thread again. I have awarded you a Wis, BTW.

@Chalky, OTOH, I have given a wow for entitlement.

The on-site search can see the private areas of the site, Google can't.
