Friends should never make hurtful digs. You don't need that crap in your life. I rib my mates it's a two way thing. But they'd never intentionally say something malicious.

Somebody wilfully hurting my partner is not a friend, he is a dick. Rather than let it fester be frank with him and tell him what you think, neutral tone. If he doesn't get it just don't get involved with him anymore.

I think that, as they get older, most people  expose more of their true personality
You can't change people, so just decide if there is any space in your life for the personality he has
Obviously it would be separate to your main life. Do you like spending time with him yourself?

I have a friend I visit alone - he lacks empathy (he's perfectly nice, but just has no empathy - quite strange), and my Mrs doesn't like him visiting us

I have another close mate who is nice, but it obnoxious once he's had two drinks, now us and all his other friends avoid him after 8pm, and try to avoid phone calls after 8pm too
