  • Looks like it's a "plus" top - one exactly the same in the "50 years of the Gibson Les Paul" book 90s section.

Yeah, it's definitely a Les Paul Custom Plus, rather than a normal custom. I remember them from that time, as I bought my Studio that same year.

They'll  be a code in the pickup route to confirm if its a plus top or not. On my Standard the colour code is in the neck cavity (hb for honeyburst) top designation in bridge cavity (LPS+ for Les Paul Standard Plus Top). I would think the same system is employed on Customs. Easy to whip pickups out and post a pic;)

This finish only came on the Custom Plus during that few year period. Customs were basically black, white and wine red (maybe another in there, but I can't think of what it might be). Plus models were £100 more expensive and came in cherry sunburst and, I think, tobacco burst (going from 22 year old memories here!).

Gibson spec varies a lot! Can't beat just having a look what it says in the pickup cavity. Don't even need to take strings off. Just stick a capo or such round neck to keep strings in place then slacked them right off and unbolt tailpiece.  Whip pickup out and av a look. First thing I do when I get a gibson..:)
