Vintage guitars ( and a suggestion for FB mods to consider)

I just posted this in another thread, but I thought the site and detailed articles were so good that it was worthy of a specific thread:

"  For those in the 'know' this will be old stuff, but for the majority of 'ordinary' folk out there (inc myself!) have a read of this excellent site - vintage guitar info.  On the theme of knowledge  expertise if you think the vintage arena is a minefield before you read this, just wait until you've read it.  The section on colours and paint and finishes (particlarly Fender) is mind-blowingly informative & frighteningly complex on its own!

Fender Colours:  http://www.guitarhq.com/fenderc.html
Gibson colours: http://www.guitarhq.com/gibsonc.html
Main site: http://www.guitarhq.com/feature.html "

I was wondering what members and the mods think of perhaps devoting a section of FB to technical articles where the moderators and a select few specialists on FB (if they are willing of course, but specialists like ICBM comes immediately to mind although there are lots of other great experts here too) could post specific technical articles, repair tips, modifications, detailed informative articles (as above) in a special 'library' section.  This would provide a valuable repository of information in a central place.

To illustrate the idea, I set up such a tech section on Valvetronix.net where only certain approved individuals were given access to vet & post articles - this went down very well & I'm sure there's lots of generic things there that might be of interest to folk on FB too:
http://www.valvetronix.net/forums/technical-articles-f51.html

I realise there's a making & modding discussion section already but this would be a central depository to house stuff eg tech diagrams, detalled articles, etc.  What are your thoughts?

I agree....can we set up a whole vintage section?

Can you put a note on it 'Strictly no riff-raff'?

  • GuitarHQ is an amazing site.  I got a bit obsessed reading about pre war Martin bridge plates/bracing.

I remember being younger and spending countless ours on that site and the fender field amp guide. Really a wealth of information.

Conversely, if we can keep all the (you) vintage snobs in one place, we can get on talking about guitars which are for playing and have unquestioned provenance.  :)

Us riff-raff wouldn't want to associate with you vintage gear heads anyway :)
One day I'm going to make a guitar out of butter to experience just how well it actually plays.

One of the fears of making too much information available in one place with an easy lookup is that the counterfeiters will know just how to defeat those knowledgeable enough to value as assess the real and fake products.

Thats kind of a catch 22 argument. I do hear you but I actually think most buyers need more help than most counterfeiters who by and large probably already know this stuff.  My view is that info like this might help folk to spot fakes, but not used to rely on to confirm authenticity..thats best done from true respected experts.  Its also just interesting stuff to read and it dispels some common myths and explains how and why things evolved.

I think it's especially useful talking about vintage tone and if you want to get close to it what people are doing

There's an awful lot of rubbish info out there, I'm talking mostly burst tone because that's my preferred tone

For instance I'm trying to arrange a back to back demo of a real 58 and a replica

Not all vintage stuff is great but the good ones are special

I'm also interested In the weight of vintage guitars

I remember an episode of The Apprentice where the winning team were "treated" to dinner with Donald and Melania at their luxurious New York apartment.

On the basis of that, I think Trump's Strat would be finished in gold leaf with gold hardware and some cheesy ornate inlays (almost certainly including his name and/or initials).  It certainly wouldn't be a relic.

So what counts as Vintage then?

    Over 25?

    Pre-1965?

Only if it's in the Vintage Guitar Price Guide?

I guess it's very subjective but for me personally it's pre 1980.
