If you were looking to make a black Telecaster look appealing to prospective buyers, what plate would you put on it?

White for stock look? Black for the all-black look? Or the one I'd personally like, Tortoise-shell?

    Can't wrong with black IMO.

I'm a fan of tortoiseshell but not everyone is

Don't go for white - it's the standard colour configuration of 99% of Squier Strats and Teles.

Black on black is always good, makes it look like a stealth bomber guitar.

A bit more out there, but red and red tortoiseshell could be pretty cool.

A subtle mint green can look good if it has a rosewood 'board.

Depends on the neck - maple, white looks best because black/black/maple makes the neck look too pale and anaemic. Rosewood, black looks best because the whole thing then approaches None More Black (well sort of).

Tortoiseshell can look really nice if it's a very high-quality plate, but cheap and horrible if it isn't, and probably has as many haters as fans so may be best avoided.

Black on black with a maple neck looks the business.  Mint green or parchment works with rosewood.

White or Black is class - I hate tortoiseshell, and it's strictly only for country musicians.  If you ruin a classic black Tele with a tortoiseshell pickguard I WILL have to shoot you!  ;) :3

  • I'm in this boat now. Looking for a new scratchplate for my black tele. It's a early CS '50s' in black with a very pale Birdseye maple board. White on there currently, but considering changing it.

    who makes good replacement plates?

  • Mint is good if rw with binding. Otherwise single ply black.

Single ply white can look nice but it often screams "old knackered mexican standard".
