I googled something like ' great live albums' and got lists with Made in Japan, Fillmore East, Strangers in the Night, etc, and realised how few I'd ever owned. I've had to go back and listen to my own recommendations today because it's so long since I've heard them. I'm clearly not a live album person; although currently got Babylon by Bus on and it's probably a better way of listening to his Bobness than the studio albums. I'll have to do some catching up obviously!

    Miles Davis - Live Evil
    Ozzy - Live and Loud
Janes Addiction - 1987 live album called Jane's Addiction.

    You like the Tansads?!

Wow. That's you, me and er, that's it I reckon!

Never met anyone else that likes them.

@Bridgehouse ;;; Yep, we (that's me & Mrs R) saw them quite a few times back in their heyday. In 1995 we even travelled across the Pennines to the The Citadel in St Helens for the gig that was recorded for the "Drag Down The Moon" album. It was a particularly hot summer's evening and absolutely rammed, consequently it was a very sweaty experience!

We have pretty much everything they've recorded - awesome band!

Glad to have found another fan!

  • Marvin Gaye Live:  doesn't seem to have a great rep, but if you can somehow overlook the dubbed and somewhat hysterical crowd reaction I think it's great.  Sublime version of Distant Lover.

Miles Davis: My Funny Valentine:  This collects the slow numbers from a Carnegie Hall concert in 1964 and maybe gets slightly overlooked because George Coleman on sax isn't as big a draw as Coltrane (who preceded him) or Wayne Shorter (who succeeded him), but it may actually be my favourite Miles album.  In fact I often think the trumpet intro to the title track may just be my favourite piece of music ever.

Sinatra at the Sands with Count Basie

Van Morrison has a good track record with live albums and there's been a recent issue of stuff recorded at the same time as it's Too Late to Stop Now but left off the original album.  Inevitably it's patchy, being a multi-album collection of outtakes, but there's some brilliant stuff.

@Bridgehouse ; Indeed - we have a couple of their albums too, but they lack the edge The Tansads had - Janet's voice was much stronger than Virginia's is.

Good Rats - Live at Last

Fairly obscure I grant you, but it's a proper live-sounding live album and certainly one of my favourites.

Pearl Jam - live on two legs

    Max Boyce- Live at Treorchy

  • I'm not generally a fan of live albums, but I do very much like:
     Nocturne (Siouxsie And The Banshees)
     Live Rust and Weld (NY)
     Space Ritual (Hawkwind)
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

Ozzy Osbourne - Talk of the Devil (aka Speak of the Devil)

The only Ozzy album to feature Brad Gillis on guitar, playing a whole set of Black Sabbath songs.  Apparently Ozzy's disowned it and it was only released to fulfil contractual obligations with Jet Records, but I love it.

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Can't believe those haven't been mentioned yet!

Can't believe I didn't mention it, just fantastic.

I'll add another: Ahmad Jamal - Live at the Pershing-But Not For Me which I'm sure I've listened to more than all other live albums combined but is jazz rather than pop/rock.

I don't know that Little Feat album. Is it post Lowell George? I'll have to check this out.

And yes, that Joe Walsh album is class, Turn To Stone, absolute classic version.
